Should You Help Mayrina in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Wondering if you should help Mayrina, resurrect her Husband, and save both from Auntie Ethel in Baldur’s Gate 3. Here are all the outcomes.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Help and save Mayrina and Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband

In Act 1, every player encounters a kind old lady, Auntie Ethel, and the majority quickly discovers there is something off about her. In this guide, we answer the essential questions on navigating through the acts of the Save Mayrina quest and what is the best outcome you can get when dealing with the old hag and her prey.

Finding Mayrina in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 How to find Ethel's House in Sunlit Wetlands

You can find Mayrina in Auntie Ethel’s House in the swamps on the southwest side of the map. However, when heading to the location outside the Blighted Village, you probably encounter two brothers arguing with the old lady in the Sunlit Wetlands. That’s when you will hear about Mayrina for the first time. Regardless, you can side with the old Auntie Ethel or the brothers. The lady disappears, and the brothers, determined to save their sister, will head deeper into the swamps.

Pass the swamps, which may not look like swamps at first, and find Auntie Ethel’s house in the southeast to find Mayrina.

Choosing to Help Mayrina in Baldur’s Gate 3

Upon entering Auntie Ethel’s house, you will encounter the cutscene where old Hag tries to convince Mayrina to eat the pie. No matter how you interact with them, saving Mayrina now is impossible. She will be sent to Hag’s lair and trapped in the cage.

Baldur's Gate 3 Find Entrance to Ethel Hag's Lair

To help Mayrina in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to refuse Auntie’s offers, and no matter if you attack her or not, she will retrieve deeper into the hidden behind the fireplace passages herself. Furthermore, you should follow her and fight all the obstacles until you find Mayrina again.

Baldur's Gate 3 How to get Past the Gnarled Door in Hag Lair to Help and save Mayrina and Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband

Firstly, you encounter a room with other victims of Auntie Ethel’s cruelty and tricks. When you stand in front of carved-in wood doors called Gnarled Doors, you simply must click somewhere behind them to pass them, and your party will discover that the doors are not material but an illusion.

In the next room, you will face hostile masked enemies. Defeat them and proceed to find Mayrina again in Baldur’s Gate 3, and finally be able to save her.

Lastly, proceed deeper into the caves, down the path filled with poisonous traps. Jump or fly above them to avoid severe damage to your team and make your way down. It’s an excellent strategy to save the game often. Your team will need spell slots and full health to face the hag in the upcoming fight. Also, depending on your difficulty level, it may be challenging.

How to Save Mayrina in Act 1?

You can save Mayrina from a cage hanging above the fire by distinguishing the fire or getting her out before the fire burns the cage down. However, the challenging part is that you must fight Auntie Ethel.

Baldur's Gate 3 How to Fight the Hag Strategies Act 1 - Help and save Mayrina

The best strategy is to send one of your characters to the Control Orb next to the cage and activate it to save Mayrina as soon as possible while the rest of your party will keep the hag busy. The crucial part is to ensure you won’t kill Mayrina accidentally. This will close your opportunity to meet her again in Act 3.

Defeating Auntie Ethel Tips:

When she makes an illusion of herself and splits it into three, you can examine each version to find the real Auntie Ethel. You can tell the real enemy by looking for the buff “Fey Life.” This buff is due to an item she wears and won’t be found on duplicates.

Secondly, the hag may use a spell to transform into Mayrina. In that case, the illusion of Mayrina(true hag) will display that it concentrates on that spell. Check Images Above.

When close to death, Auntie Ethel will offer you a gift for sparing her life, but she will still insist on taking Mayrina with her.

The Possible Choices and Outcomes

You have three possible choices and consequences of saving Mayrina:

  • Agree, but Auntie will flee and take the pregnant woman with her
  • Refuse and kill the Hag. You will save Mayrina but won’t get the permanent bonus to your ability score.
  • Successfully pass a charisma skill check and let Auntie Ethel go, but save Mayrina and get the +1 to the chosen ability.

The best choice here is to persuade Hag to leave Mayrina behind and allow her to flee while you get the permanent bonus and save the girl. Let me explain why below.

Consequences of Helping Mayrina in BG3

If you save and help Mayrina, the hag is dead (not entirely) or has escaped, and the girl will be upset with you and tell you about their deal—the baby for resurrecting Mayrina’s dead husband, one of the most sad stories in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Help Mayrina

There are three possible consequences of helping Mayrina. If you let Hag take Mayrina, you will get the bonus, but later in Act 3, you will learn more about Auntie Ethel’s practices with babies. She was going to eat the baby, and the poor girl would end up dead like her brothers.

Baldur's Gate 3 Auntie Ethel Hag - should you Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband

If you kill Auntie Ethel, you won’t get the bonus, and importantly, she will still be alive. Auntie will fake her death and escape anyway. On the other hand, simply killing by accident or allowing Mayrina to die will have zero benefits, other than you still can get the bonus.

After upset Mayrina escapes, you can use the Speak with the Dead spell on Hag’s body(if you decided to kill her) to learn Auntie Ethel was going to eat the baby. This will unlock the additional Persuasion option.

Baldur's Gate 3 Staff of Crones BG3

Also, ensure you loot the next cave chamber, the Acrid Workshop, in the Overgrown Tunnel and pick up the Bitter Divorce and Staff of Crones. You will need the Bitter Divorce if you decide to resurrect Mayrina’s Husband. It is on the table next to the door. Leave the hag’s lair by interacting with the green monochrome circle.

Should You Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband?

You will find Mayrina outside of the tree house next to the coffin with the dead husband. You can use the Bitter Divorce wand to resurrect him. Sadly, Connor will become a zombie, controlled by the wand. You can give the wand to Maryna, and she will return it to Baldur’s Gate. Alternatively, if you refuse or kill Connor, Mayrina will become hostile, and you will need to kill her.

Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband Save and Help her in Baldur's Gate 3

No matter what you say, Mayrina will not see reason at this point in the game, and you cannot persuade her to leave or kill her Husband. Allowing her to resurrect Mayrina’s Husband and let both go is the best outcome you can get at this point in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Story. However, don’t worry. You can meet them both alongside other hag’s survivors again in need of your help in Act 3.

Keep the Bitter Divorce for Yourself

The second option is not to resurrect Mayrina’s Husband and keep the wand and ability to summon Connor to fight at your side in Baldur’s Gate 3. He will stay summoned for 10 turns before disappearing again. It’s a spell with no limits, so you can cast it as often as you wish.

However, by not helping Mayrina bring her husband back, she will be unhappy with this choice yet still head to Baldur’s Gate. You will also meet her again in Act 3, but she will be much more hostile and treat you like the new enemy.

Saving Mayrina in Act 3 in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Old Garlow's Place Hag Survivors Mayrina Staff of Interruption - Resurrect Mayrina’s Husband

In Baldur’s Gate City in Act 3, you can find Mayrina again. She will be transformed into a sheep at Old Garlow’s Place in the Lower City. To enter, you must destroy the bookcase on the southwest side of the building.

Mayrina works with a group of hag survivors at Old Garlow’s Place. To return her to her original form, you can cast the Remove Curse spell on herself or the cursed doll gliding around the room. Alternatively, you can destroy the doll without killing Mayrina. You’ll need high burst damage since Mayrina takes only a fixed amount of damage.

Baldur's Gate 3 - Help and save Mayrina and her Husband in Act 3

Mayrina will reward the party for helping the Hag Survivors. If Connor is with her and in Baldur’s Gate, you can now convince her to let her husband’s memory go and bring him peace by destroying the Bitter Divorce.

Additionally, in Act 3, you can find Auntie Ethel again on a hunt for a child to eat, and you can learn why exactly the evil hag is doing it. The reward for saving another little girl is an excellent Warlock weapon, the Duellist’s Prerogative (how to get the weapon guide).
