We recommend playing Avowed on a keyboard setup as it offers a greater degree of control, increasing the overall immersion.

After years of hype and anticipation, we finally have another game from Obsidian. The developer’s latest RPG, Avowed, is a return to form, boasting a gripping yet moldable narrative along with the player freedom that you’ve come to expect from Obsidian over the years. The game is available on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC.
If you’re playing Avowed on PC, you have the choice to play with a keyboard-and-mouse or a controller setup. While the game is fundamentally the same across both choices, there are a few tweaks here and there that can make the experience different. The controller setup offers a more relaxed experience, whereas a keyboard setup provides a greater degree of control over your character.
You also have to take into consideration that Avowed can be played in both first- and third-person modes. The first-person mode, as the name suggests, puts you in a first-person view where you see everything from the eyes of your character. This is more immersive, requires greater precision, and is better suited for a keyboard setup. The third-person mode pulls you out of the eyes of your character and places the camera behind you. In this instance, the movement feels smoother with a controller.
We recommend playing the game in first-person with a keyboard setup. There are a bunch of reasons why we recommend doing so, which we shall discuss below.

As stated earlier, the keyboard setup offers you a greater degree of control over your character in Avowed. You can assign hotkeys as you see fit, allowing you to use tools at the press of a button quickly. On a controller, you have to bring up the radial menu to do so, making the whole process much slower and more game-like. The hotkeys offer control that makes your in-game character a direct extension of you, increasing immersion overall. The controller makes the game feel more game-like in a way that is not necessarily bad.
All of this boils down to personal preference, but we recommend sticking to a keyboard and mouse for Avowed.
