Imane “Pokimane” Anys recently commented that streaming is becoming a male-dominated space. She attributed her thoughts to the rise in popularity of streamers like Kai Cenat and Darren “IShowSpeed” Watkins Jr., who are thriving on Twitch and YouTube, respectively. Fellow content creator John “Tectone” called Pokimane and said that gender was not a factor in streaming.

Tectone said that other streamers don’t reach Kai and Speed’s level because they don’t grind like them. He said that they invest the most into their streams, and “success isn’t just given to you.”

Tectone Calls Out Pokimane Over Her Comments About Kai and Speed

After Pokimane’s comments went viral, Tectone weighed in on the situation and defended Kai and Speed. He said:

“That’s because no other streamer is on kai or speeds level. No one’s grinding like them. No one’s investing like them. Male or female. Success isn’t just given you have to earn it. Stop making this a gender thing. It’s weird af”

Many internet users agreed with Tectone. Some also pointed out that Kai and Speed are much younger while Pokimane got a headstart in her streaming career. In January 2025, Pokimane had over 2 million live views and a peak viewership of over 8,400 viewers on Twitch. She is currently among the top 60 English Just Chatting channels.

Despite her large audience, stream analytics website SullyGnome revealed that only three female streamers made it to the top 100 on Twitch in 2024. Among the top 20 followed channels on Twitch, Pokimane is the only female streamer.

Why Poki Thinks Streaming Is Becoming Male-Dominated

Pokimane attended a podcast on the YouTube channel Colin and Samir. During the episode “An Unfiltered Conversation with Pokimane” she brought up Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed. During the 1:20:45 mark of the podcast, the streamer commented:

“As much as I think Kai and Speed are incredible, and what they do is incredible, also when I think of them, I think of how much the audience has changed over the years as well.”

She analyzed  their success from a “data and analytics” perspective and said:

“I find it really interesting to see who are the top streamers, their similarities, their differences, especially in terms of audiences. And, unfortunately, there aren’t that many, huge, huge, huge female streamers, at least not on level.”

Pokimane said that the streamers you see on the top also reflect the viewership. She claimed that the streaming was becoming less male-dominated. However, Kai and Speed’s popularity brought back the male dominance according to her.
