Tales of the Shire trades in the war and fighting in the Lord of the Rings for a quiet life with hobbits. You are a new settler in Bywater, and your primary goal in the game is to keep building stronger bonds with all of your neighbors in the village. As you start out, you will realize that getting those fellowship levels up with the other residents mostly relies on you treating them to their favorite foods. Even though cooking the first few dishes is simple, soon you’ll find more complex recipes that require harder-to-get ingredients.

For instance, you will need eggs for many of the recipes, and you can only acquire eggs by owning and caring for chickens in your homestead. In the following guide, we’ll explore how you can get chickens in Tales of the Shire and how you can care for them.

You can unlock chickens in the game by raising your fellowship levels with either Young Tom or Farmer Cotton. Thankfully, you can get down to this very early on, and you don’t have to wait an extended period for the chickens to become available. Simply call on either of these characters for a shared meal. Prepare them the dishes they like, and your bond with them will strengthen.

We suggest focusing on Farmer Cotton to get the chickens. At fellowship level 3, you’ll get one chicken from him. Similarly, you’ll get one more chicken each at levels 6 and 10. Finally, you can get a final chicken by raising your bond level with Young Tom to 10, which is the max.

How To Care for Chickens in Tales of the Shire

Your chickens will stay inside a coop. You will need to regularly feed them by putting food in the trough just outside their coop. Nuts, seeds, and grains are acceptable foods for chickens. If you feed them regularly, your chickens will give you a steady supply of eggs. However, if you don’t, they’ll chase you around in the garden. So, make sure you keep them fed and collect their eggs regularly to prepare various dishes. Otherwise, you might miss out on maximizing your egg stockpile.
