In The Alters, you’ll need to constantly manage your base of operations. Without it, you don’t have any chance of survival. The base is what keeps you safe from the dangerous radiation levels on the planet’s surface, allowing you to rest and go about your other business. In return, you need to maintain the base properly, including changing its radiation filters from time to time.

Initially, you will need to manage the base and perform all other activities manually. However, as the game progresses, it becomes harder to keep up with everything that needs your attention. As such, the prospect of changing the base radiation filters might slip your mind.

If that happens, the ramifications can be severe. In fact, your game could come to an end prematurely if the radiation inside the base gets bad enough and kills you and your alters. That’s why you will eventually unlock a way to automate base repairs in The Alters. In this guide, we’ll explain how the automation system works.

If you’re trying to automate the repair process, the first to do is to set up Mining Outposts whenever possible. You need Metal and Organics to craft repair kits and radiation filters, so try to maximize these resource acquisitions to ensure that there isn’t ever a shortage. Once you have sufficient Organics and Metal supplies, the next part of the automation process involves assigning one of the alters the job to craft repair kits and filters.

You can even set the number of kits and filters you want in stock at all times using the Uphold mechanic. So, if you set the Uphold value to 3 for repair kits, the assigned alter will automatically craft another kit whenever there are two remaining in stock. We recommend setting the Uphold value for both these items to around 5-6. That should allow you to deal with the effects of sudden malfunctions or storms.

Another thing to note is that you won’t be able to use the Uphold functionality until you experience the first Magnetic Storm in the game. So, before this point, you will need to manually repair your base and change the filters.

Each alter in the game specializes in certain activities. So, before assigning an alter to repairs, you will need to figure out which of them is best suited to the job. Jan Technician is the perfect candidate to assign to base repair operations. If you let him do this particular job, it leads to +50% efficiency in Base Maintenance. Make sure you keep Jan Technician happy at all times, as an upset alter will refuse to perform their assigned duties, including the base repair activities.
