Best House for Protego Build
Houses are primarily relevant for the story and role play. Consider picking a house, wand, and or a playstyle that fits the story of your character. This will not increase or decrease the performance of your build.

How Does Protego Work In Hogwarts Legacy?
Protego is a protection skill with an orange halo above your head when it needs to be cast. You can use this in two forms, holding it down until the attack is registered OR waiting for a “perfect protego” which is just at the last second. The harder the difficulty setting, the less time you have to react with this ability. Thus, you need to practice. The red halo is for dodge rolls, which occur with more melee focus enemies like giant spiders and trolls. The image above shows the flashing white halo, this is when you click the button (my keybinds are different) for a perfect Protego.
Spell Combinations Explained
This build will do most of its damage, crowd control and stuns via Protego useable, but here are some good spells to focus on.
- Glacius acts as a massive damage amplifier, and cast with Diffindo, you’ll get the most single-target damage in the game.
- Diffindo unlocked by completing Professor Sharp’s Assignment 2. This is the highest single target skill in the game, and with talent, it can do area damage! Combined with the two debuffs, you can easily get over 7,000 damage at end game.
- Levioso obtained after completing Defense Against the Dark Arts Class Main Quest. Levioso is also a great option, plus the talent Levioso Mastery makes the spell multiple targets as well! Then follow up with Bombarda for an amazing knockback.
- Bombarda obtained after completing Professor Howin’s Assignment. This spell is a great followup to Airborne enemies since it does massive damage and a knockback. This combo allows you to lift and knock off ledges and terrain for some epic kills.
Glacius + Diffindo = very high single target damage nuke.
Levioso + Bombarda = crowd control and huge knockback and stun.
Important Talents Explained
These important perks are all about making Protego even more powerful and relying on it for damage, stuns and control.
Protego Mastery (level 22) – perfect Protego releases a damaging blast that breaks enemy shields.
- Why? shield breaking is very important at the end game with higher difficulty and this will let your Protego reflects do it for you.
Stupefy Expertise (required level 22) – stupefy deals direct damage on impact.
- Why? This talent adds damage to reflect via the Stupefy reflect.
Protego Expertise (required level 16) – blocking a spell with perfect Protego will send two projectiles back at enemies.
- Why? This turns Perfect Protego into area damage hitting more than one enemy.
Stupefy Mastery (required level 16) – enemies struck with stupefy remain stunned for a longer period of time.
- Why? When deflecting an attack with Protego you can stun them and this aids in the longer duration of the stun.
Protego Absorption (required level 5) successful Protego blocks will contribute to the Ancient Magic Meter. Perfect Protego blocks contribute even more.
- Why? This talent allows us to work towards our huge ultimate nuke Ancient Magic skill for something we are already doing, using Protego.
Edurus Potion Potency talent (required level 5) – Edurus Potion makes you invulnerable and deflects projectile attacks back to enemies.
- Why? Since we are building a powerhouse defensive build, this talent gives us 20 seconds of zero damage.

Combat & Rotation
Now that you have a general idea of the build, it will look like this.
- Pop a Maxima or Edurus Potion in hard fights.
- Use a combination of Glacius and Diffindo for damage.
- Priorities ALWAYS use Protego when the pop-up happens.
- Use Levioso and Bombarda to control and knockback enemies off of ledges.
- Fight off Ancient Magic on trolls or higher health monsters.
Rinse and repeat!
Consumables Explained
Potions and plants arrive very early in the game and are strong aids in combat. Once you start to unlock the room of requirement and beast taming through the main story quest, you will be able to farm many materials, making the mats much easier to obtain.
- Edurus Potion = is the single best damage reduction item in the game. With a level 5 perk, you will not die for 20 seconds.
- Maxima Potion increases the drinker’s spell damage for a limited amount of time. A great addition for high-damage spells.
- Invisibility Potion makes you invisible for a short period. You can use this as an escape mechanism and reset or escape a fight if you are in trouble.
Armor Traits Explained
An important thing to note about Armor traits is that they are multiplicative. This means they get stronger the more you equip your armor. You have 6 slots in total and generally want all 6 to be uniform for maximum results. In this build, you can go with a 3-by-3 approach or stack one of a massive boost to Ancient Magic generation or all spell damage. Hogwsmead Brood and Peck has materials for sale if your beast taming isn’t up to a high enough level.
- Ancient Magic Focus III significantly increased the Ancient Magic Meter fill rate. The Protego build primary hard-hitting ability through Ancient Magic. This will allow us to regenerate at a very fast rate when defending with Protego.
- Concentration III Significantly increased damage of all Damage spells. Concentration is a well-rounded trait when you don’t have another option or want something less dependent on Ancient Magic.
- Protego Shielding III significantly decreased damage taken from Dark Wizards. Protego Shielding is more of a role-play trait vs a pure performance base. But you will face many Dark Wizards are your journey, and it will protect you.
