Using Qi, Spirits provides a passive and active skill, and in this post, we rank the 10 best in Black Myth Wukong.
Spirits are temporary transformations, separate from the Transformation Spells in Black Myth Wukong. You obtain Spirits from defeating certain options bosses, or elite enemies in the game. The Spirits essentially serve as a passive burst ability that you can use alongside your Spells that lets you perform a powerful attack, without completely transforming into a different creature, a la Transformation Spells. Think of these are the “ultimate” ability of the Destined One, which runs on a rather long cooldown.
Unlocking the Spirits is simple. All you need to do is defeat an empowered elite enemy (recognized by the blue hue emanating from their bodies) or mini-bosses, often right before a main story boss and absorb their Spirits using your Healing Gourd. Once you capture a Spirit, you can slot it in the Spirits tab of the Equipments menu. To use the Spirit during combat, you need to press LT+RT (on Xbox controllers) or L2+R2 (on PlayStation controllers) to dish out massive amounts of damage to the enemy.
In addition to providing an option to dish out a burst of damage, the Spirits also offer distinct passive perks. As such, not all the Spirits in Balck Myth Wukong as equally as effective as you would think. Here’s a list of the best Spirits in Black Myth Wukong, ranked.
Best Spirits Ranked in Black Myth Wukong
The best spirit in Black Myth Wukong is the Wandering Wight because not only does it deal a ton of damage when used, but it also offers a boost to Defense. Although it doesn’t have any elemental benefits, the Wandering Wight more than makes up for its shortcomings by being an incredible powerhouse, capable of knocking back even the toughest of end-game bosses. This is the first Spirit unlocked and is the strongest overall, though Apramana and Earth Wolf Also do well.
Below is a ranking of Spirits in Black Myth Wukong, from best to worst:
- Wandering Wight: Deals a ton of damage, and also boosts Defense.
- Apramana Bat: Deals Frost damage, but does not have any passive bonus.
- Earth Wolf: Deals a ton of momentum damage, and also grants Focus charge on hit.
- Father of Stones: Deals AOE damage, and increases critical chance and damage.
- Centipede Guai: Deals a ton of momentum damage, and also increases movement speed.
- Gore-Eye Daoist: Buffs attack power in the vicinity, and also increases maximum Mana.
- Old Ginseng Guai: Summons Ginsenglings that attack and inflict Poison status, and also increases the health of summoned minions (including Pluck of Many Spell).
- Non-Pure: Deals heavy damage via a multi-hit combo, and also increases damage reduction after using Rock Solid.
- Non-Void: Grants temporary invincibility, and temporarily recovers Stamina when being hit.
- Civet Sergeant: Deals a ton of damage using twin blade attacks, and also slightly buffs attack power.
10 Civet Sergeant
Below are the Spirit Civet Sergeant’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Civet Sergeant
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Civet Sergeant and hurls twin blades at the locked on enemy, dealing moderate amount of damage.
- Secondary Perk: Moderately increases attack power.
- Strengths: Deals a good amount of damage upon activation, and also gives a 10 attack power buff.
- Weaknesses: The damage dealt isn’t enough to stagger end-game bosses, and the attack power buff is only viable if you have plenty of Crit Chance to capitalize on it.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is most effective against boss fights, but only in early to mid-game.
The Civet Sergeant is a good Spirit choice for the early to mid-game sections, primarily due to its knock-back ability as well as the passive 10 attack power boost. However, it doesn’t really compare all that well to some of the other, more powerful Spirit options you get in Black Myth Wukong. Additionally, the damage it deals doesn’t affect end-game bosses due to their hyperarmor as well as significantly higher defense.
9 Non-Void
Below are Non-Void features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Non-Void
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Non-Void Monk and turns invincible for a few seconds, akin to Cloud Step.
- Secondary Perk: Recovers a moderate amount of Stamina upon getting hit by enemies.
- Strengths: Acts as a good defensive option due to the brief invincibility, with the option to counterattack almost immediately.
- Weaknesses: Does not have any offensive capabilities, and has very situational use cases.
- Best Situations: Mostly effective against humanoid bosses, especially in Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) and Chapter 5 (Flaming Mountain).
The Non-Void is a good choice if you want an alternative to the Cloud Step Spell, and use Rock Solid in place of it. The Spirit ability is almost identical to that of the Cloud Step, with lower Critical Damage. However, it also has a very fast Qi recovery, making it viable for playstyles that rely too much on Cloud Step and the follow-up critical strike. Unfortunately, apart from being an alternative to Cloud Step, the Non-Void Spirit doesn’t offer anything else to pick it over other choices in Black Myth Wukong.
8 Non-Pure
Below are the Non-Pure Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Non-Pure
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Non-Pure Monk and deals damage to locked-on enemies with a three-hit combo.
- Secondary Perk: Increases damage reduction briefly after using Rock Solid Spell.
- Strengths: Deals a ton of damage upon activation, and also has a good amount of knock-back.
- Weaknesses: Not very effective against groups of enemies or beast-type bosses with higher poise.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is most effective against humanoid bosses and enemies, due to its knock-back capability.
Non-Pure is an excellent choice if you want an all-out offensive Spirit option that has good knock-back. However, it falls woefully short in the DPS department, especially when compared to alternatives like Wandering Wight and Earth Wolf. The only reason you would want to use the Non-Pure Spirit is due to its secondary perk, i.e., damage reduction upon casting Rock Solid. However, if you don’t have Rock Solid equipped instead of Cloud Step, then this Spirit won’t be a good choice for your build.
7 Old Ginseng Guai
Below are the Old Ginseng Guait Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Old Ginseng Guai
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Old Ginseng Guai and summons two minions that divert the aggression of the enemies and also deal a good amount of damage.
- Secondary Perk: Increases the maximum health of summoned minions, including the ones that you call forth using A Pluck of Many Spell.
- Strengths: Grants hyperarmor upon activation. Furthermore, the summoned minions deal quite a lot of damage, even to bosses, and can survive for quite a while.
- Weaknesses: No other offensive capabilities apart from summoning the minions.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is most effective against groups of enemies, and also some mini-bosses.
The Old Ginseng Guai Spirit is a perfect option if you want something to use against mobs of enemies. The best use case for this Spirit is in Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) where you will be constantly swarmed with enemies. It’s also quite effective against certain bosses, but not in the end-game. The Old Ginseng Guai Spirit is also a great choice for builds that focus on A Pluck of Many and summoned minions.
6 Gore-Eye Daoist
Below are the Gore-Eye Daoist Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Gore-Eye Daoist
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Gore-Eye Daoist and plants a toad-wielding staff on the ground. The aura emanating from the staff lasts for quite a while and significantly buffs the attack power of the Destined One.
- Secondary Perk: Increases maximum Mana.
- Strengths: Grants a massive boost to attack power and also a slight increase to Mana.
- Weaknesses: Doesn’t have any active offensive ability.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is incredibly effective against boss fights, especially those that are within a small arena.
The Gore-Eye Daoist Spirit is a good choice for almost every other build in Black Myth Wukong. Although it doesn’t have any active offensive capabilities, it does grant a massive boost to attack power. Furthermore, the Qi cost for the Gore-Eye Daoist is quite low compared to other end-game suitable Spirits. As such, during certain end-game boss fights, you will be able to cast the Spirit’s ability at least twice, giving you plenty of time to dish out bonus damage. Additionally, it also boosts the base Mana capacity, allowing you to sneak in a single additional Immobilize or Cloud Step during combat.
5 Centipede Guai
Below are the Centipede Guai Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Centipede Guai
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Centipede Guai and collides with the enemies in the front, dealing a ton of damage over time.
- Secondary Perk: Increases movement speed.
- Strengths: Deals a ton of damage upon activation, and can be controlled to hit multiple enemies at the same time.
- Weaknesses: Slow activation animation and lack of any hyperarmor make it less viable against some of the end-game bosses.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is best used against bosses or small groups of enemies.
The Centipede Guai Spirit is an incredibly powerful ability, albeit with some minor caveats. Although it doesn’t deal as much damage as the Father of Stones or the Earth Wolf, it does stay active for much longer. Furthermore, the Centipede Guai Spirit also increases movement speed which in turn, aids in perfect dodges as well as jumps. Lastly, given you can control the trajectory of the Centipede Guai transformation, it works quite well as a crowd control ability.
4 Father of Stones
Below are the Father of Stones Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Father of Stones
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Father of Stones and deals AOE damage to nearby enemies with a roar.
- Secondary Perk: Slightly increases critical hit chance and damage.
- Strengths: Deals a ton of damage upon activation and also covers a wide area, making it incredibly well suited for mobs as well as bosses.
- Weaknesses: Slow activation animation and also a rather lengthy build-up.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is best used against groups of enemies, knocking them back and also dealing a good amount of damage.
The Father of Stone Spirit is an incredibly powerful Spirit that does a massive AOE attack upon activation which covers a wide area. It’s mostly effective against groups of enemies, particularly those found in Chapter 4 (The Webbed Hollow) and Chapter 5 (Flaming Mountain). However, it can also knock back bosses, including the end-game ones like the Supreme Inspector, Stone Monkey, and Erlang Shen.
3 Earth Wolf
Below are the Earth Wolf Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Earth Wolf
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Earth Wolf and rams the enemies that are targeted, dealing a ton of damage.
- Secondary Perk: Grants additional Focus upon hitting enemies for a short duration.
- Strengths: Upon activation, deals a ton of damage and staggers enemies easily.
- Weaknesses: Isn’t effective against airborne enemies.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is most effective against bosses, and elite enemies.
The Earth Wolf is incredibly effective against bosses and even elite enemies, as it can deal damage in any direction, as long as you are locked onto an enemy. The only downside to this ability is its lack of aerial coverage, as well as lower damage output compared to the Apramana Bat and the Wandering Wight. It’s still a great choice if you want more control over the Spirit ability, especially when faced against agile humanoid enemies.
2 Apramana Bat
Below are the Apramana Bat Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Apramana Bat
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Apramana Bat, rises in midair, and performs a Frost-imbued cross-slash.
- Secondary Perk: None.
- Strengths: Deals a ton of damage upon activation, and also causes Frost build-up which immobilizes enemies for a short duration.
- Weaknesses: Slightly slow activation animation, and no hyperarmor.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is most effective against boss fights, but also works against small groups of enemies.
The Apramana Bat Spirit is arguably the most powerful option that you’ll get in Black Myth Wukong, simply due to the amount of damage it deals. In addition to the raw damage, this ability also inflicts Frost, which freezes regular and elite enemies, and staggers bosses for a good few seconds. The only reason it’s not placed above Wandering Wight is due to its attack power not being all that good against bosses with high elemental (Four Banes) resistance.
1 Wandering Wight
Below are the Wandering Wight Spirit’s features in Black Myth Wukong:
- Spirit: Wandering Wight
- Primary Perk: Upon use, the Destined One takes the form of the Wandering Wight and slams the forehead on the enemy, dealing a ton of damage.
- Secondary Perk: Significantly increases Defense.
- Strengths: Deals a ton of damage upon activation, and is also capable of knocking back enemies and bosses.
- Weaknesses: Slightly slow animation, leaves the Destined One open to attack during the activation phase.
- Best Situations: The Spirit ability is most effective against boss fights, or one-on-one battles.
The Wandering Wight is incredibly effective not only in the early-game chapters but also in the end-game and is easily the best Spirit in Black Myth Wukong. Not only does the Spirit ability deal a ton of damage, but it also has massive knock-back capability, which makes it a fantastic choice for boss fights. Given the majority of the game is comprised of well, boss fights, the Wandering Wight is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a pure DPS option when it comes to Spirits. Furthermore, the Spirit also buffs Defense, which helps with passive damage negation.
The only downside of this Spirit is its slow activation phase, which makes it somewhat difficult to use without Immobilize Spell or having staggered an enemy.
