Umamusume Pretty Derby’s gameplay loop easily lends itself to a controller-based experience, but can you play it with a controller?

Umemusume Pretty Derby throws you right into the thick of intense horse-girl races, faithfully adapting the content of the anime of the same name. There are familiar faces in this one, and you get to manage them to make them the best horse-girl racers. The game has tons of management elements, and you’ll spend a good amount of time staring at sim-based screens.
Since you’ll be spending a good amount of time looking at menus and doing other sim-based stuff, this is a game you’d want to sit back and play. Thankfully, you can do just that, as Umamusume Pretty Derby can be played with a controller. You can hook up a controller of your choice and get to the game right away with ease. There are a few bugs that you may face when playing with a controller, but we’ve listed fixes for them below.

The main issue you’ll face when playing Umamusume Pretty Derby with a controller is that the game does not recognize your controller. If you’ve stumbled across this error, follow the steps given below:
- Launch your Steam application, and then click on the Steam button in the top left corner of your screen.
- This will open a drop-down menu. Click on Settings in this menu, which will then open Steam Settings.
- Under Steam Settings, you’ll see several options. Go to the Controller option towards the bottom. This is the sixth button from the bottom. Clicking on this will show you the game’s controller settings.
- Under Controller Settings, you’ll see the option to enable Steam Input. Turn this option on. If you use multiple controllers, you’ll see the option separately for them. Turn the option on for whichever controller you use.
- With Steam input enabled, you’ll then be able to launch the game and use the controller seamlessly.
This is an issue mostly seen when using PlayStation controllers on Steam. If you enable Steam Input, Steam will emulate your PlayStation controller and tune it to Steam. We also recommend trying Big Picture Mode, as that solves most of the controller issues.
