5 Best Late Surger Skills in Umamusume: Pretty Derby
All the skills listed below are exclusive to the Late Surger running style. In the case of rare skills, the “Total Base Cost” includes the SP (Skill Points) cost of buying the prerequisite normal skill and the rare skill.
5) Late Surger Straightaways
- Base Cost: 130 (upgradable)
- Support Cards: Eishin Flash, SR Meisho Doto, SR Agnes Digital
- Effect: Slightly increase velocity
‘Late Surger Straightaways’ slightly increases velocity for 3 seconds on a straight. Most races have only one straight, which means that the skill will either trigger in the early-race or late-race sections.
This gives the skill a 50% chance of activating in the late race, where it will provide the most value. Since Late Surger Straightaways is relatively cheap with skill hints, you can afford for it to trigger at the wrong time.
4) Late Surger Savvy

Late Surger Savvy is a passive skill that will always activate as long as you are using the Late Surger running style. It provides a passive +40 buff to the Wit stat and slightly improves field of view. The hidden field of view stat is important for Late Surgers as it helps them take better positions, reducing the chance of getting stuck in the pack.
The ‘Studious’ skill, which costs 120 SP, only increases field of view by +5 for 3 seconds, while Late Surger Savvy accomplishes the same for the entire race, along with an added bonus to Wit. You can upgrade the skill to get +60 Wit and +10 field of view total, but it isn’t worth it unless no other good SP investments are available.
3) Outer Swell
- Base Cost: 180
- Characters: Mejiro Ryan, Special Week, King Halo
- Support Cards: SSR Winning Ticket, SSR Special Week (Speed), SSR Special Week (Guts), SSR Oguri Cap
- Effect: Increase velocity
‘Outer Swell’ slightly increases target speed for 3 seconds when passing another runner on the outside of the final corner. Late Surgers usually make their move from the outside of the final corner, overtaking a few racers in the process.
Therefore, there is a high probability of ‘Outer Swell’ activating in the most important part of the race. The rare version of ‘Outer Swell’ is ‘Rising Dragon,’ and only Mejiro Ryan has access to it.
2) Fast & Furious
- Total Base Cost: 360
- Characters: Winning Ticket
- Support Cards: SSR Tamamo Cross
- Effect: Increase velocity
‘Fast & Furious’ increases target speed mid-race for 1.8 seconds. Late Surgers begin to pick up the pace in the mid-race, positioning to overtake the leader on the final corner. The rare skill, ‘Fast & Furious,’ or its normal version, ‘Position Pilferer,’ provides a considerable boost to speed during that pivotal part of the race.

1) On Your Left!

‘On Your Left!’ dramatically increases acceleration in the late race for 1.8 seconds. Acceleration is the most important element for the late race and allows umas to reach their top speeds as soon as possible. ‘On Your Left!’ or its normal version, ‘Slick Surge,’ is a must-have for Late Surgers to shoot across the finish line with no one in sight.
