You first hear about a relic called the Nightsong in Act 1, but where is it and how do you find it in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The are several different ways to find out about the Nightsong while you’re adventuring in Act 1, but you won’t be able to discover the location until deep into Act 2. The Nightsong ties in strongly with the main story in Act 2 and Shadowheart’s personal quest. Moreover, the choices you make about the Nightsong once you find it will have powerful consequences for Shadowheart’s story and the rest of the game.
This guide will cover everything you need to know about the Nightsong, including where to find it, what it is, and the consequences of saving or destroying it. Therefore, there will be a lot of reveals and spoilers in the information below, so proceed with caution.
How to Find the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3
To find the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to progress the story until you reach the Shadow-Cursed Lands in Act 2, locate the Grand Mausoleum, and unlock the secret passage into the Gauntlet of Shar. The entrance to the Grand Mausoleum is on the west side of the map, far to the north of Reithwin Town.
Inside the Mausoleum, head into the far back (north) room. There will be a lot of traps you should disarm first. Then, you’ll need to press the buttons under the paintings in a specific order. First, the Moonrise Towers/Selunite painting, next the Grief/Funeral painting, and then the General/Shar painting. This will unlock the secret passageway down into the Gauntlet of Shar. If you haven’t already, we highly recommend that you add Shadowheart to your active party, as this area is a vital part of her personal story.
Complete the Trials in the Gauntlet of Shar
After you first enter the Gauntlet of Shar, you’ll need to get past an entrance puzzle. This is very easy to do. Simply have one character use Misty Step to teleport over to the gem pedestal in front of the statue. Interact with it, and you’ll be free to move forward.
Now, the Gauntlet of Shar is open for you to explore. However, if you want to find the Nightsong your main goal will be to complete the three Trials and find all four Umbral Gems.
- Soft-Step Trial: Interact with Shar statue. Crouch and sneak through the last door on the right. Avoid shadows and traps, head straight to the back wall, and press a button on the right. The wall in front will rise. Head through all the way forward and then to the left.
- Self-Same Trial: Your party will be fighting shadow versions of themselves. You can make the encounter simpler by only having one character go in. Additionally, remove their clothes before you interact with the Shar basin. Then put them back on and go in for the fight.
- Faith-Leap Trial: Head down the stairs past the giant statue to find the third and final trial. Take a look at the floor in front of the blood altar. It shows the map of how to proceed through the shadows to get to the other side of the room.
- Find Yurgir: For the last gem, you will need to either kill Yurgir or break his contract with Raphael. Once he is gone, you can find the last gem on his bed made of corpses.

Find the Nightsong in the Shadowfell
Entering the Shadowfell will lock you out of nearly all side quests you may have unlocked in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. When you return, the game will propel the story forward into Act 2’s climax confrontation. Make sure you’ve done everything else you wanted to complete before going any farther.
Next, take the four Umbral Gems you have collected to the first Ancient Altar and place one in the empty slot. The elevator that appears will take you to another platform, where you must insert the other three gems. This will unlock a doorway that leads into a mysterious pool with a statue of Shar. A dialogue scene will Shadowheart will trigger automatically. Afterward, step into the pool of water and you’ll be transported to the Shadowfell.
Jump down the platforms, and at the bottom, you will find what you have been seeking: the Nightsong.
What is the Nightsong in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The major reveal is that the Nightsong is not an inanimate object but a living being: an aasimar and daughter of the goddess Selûne, whose proper name is Dame Aylin. The necromancer Balthazar has trapped her and is funneling her power of immortality into General Ketheric Thorm. The Nightsong is the reason he cannot be killed.
Furthermore, she and the cleric Isobel had fallen in love, and Aylin’s feelings have not changed despite the passage of decades. She still believes Isobel to be dead, and is unaware of Ketheric’s new alliances.
With the living, breathing Nightsong in front of you, Shadowheart now faces a crossroads. Does she kill the Nightsong and fulfill Lady Shar’s will? Or does she refuse and choose to save the Nightsong instead?
Choosing to Kill the Nightsong
Choosing to let Shadowheart kill the Nightsong will bind her forevermore to Shar, and she will fulfill her dream to become a Dark Justiciar. You will be rewarded with Shar’s Spear of Evening, a legendary weapon that will grant you Advantage on saving throws while hidden and a unique spell.
Furthermore, Aylin’s death will result in the light shield protecting the Last Light Inn failing. As a result, any who are sheltering there will die. This will include potential party companions Jaheira and Halsin, along with major NPCs like Isobel and Dammon.
Later on in Act 3, Shadowheart can visit the House of Grief in the Lower City and challenge the Mother Superior for leadership. Moreover, if you are in a romance with her, Shadowheart will become more distant as her devotion to Shar grows.
Choosing to Save the Nightsong
To save the Nightsong, you will have to make the right dialogue choices when speaking with Shadowheart. The key is to not push Shadowheart too hard in either direction. Respect her choice in the first dialogue response and the Nightsong will pick up the conversation. Ask her if this is truly what she wants and you may see some hesitation. Ultimately, she will ask you directly for your opinion about what she should do. Tell her that it is her choice, and you can’t make it for her.
There are some Persuasion options available that you can choose to try and directly keep Shadowheart from killing the Nightsong. However, these are high-risk options – one is a 30 DC roll and another is a 21 DC, so using them can be a big gamble.
The consequences of freeing the Nightsong are that she immediately comes back into her power, and will reward Shadowheart with Selune’s Spear of Night. Then, Dame Aylin takes to the skies and flies to the final confrontation with Ketheric. She will become available as a temporary companion in that fight, and her strength is a fantastic asset.
Finally, following the clash with Ketheric Thorm, Aylin and Isobel will reunite. Additionally, they will become camp followers and stay throughout most of the Act 3. Aylin can be spoken to again and will share what she knows of Shadowheart with her.
Additionally, Shadowheart can still visit the House of Grief, only this time her confrontation with the Mother Superior will be to defeat the Sharran enclave entirely.
