The grand tale of One Piece follows the adventures of the Straw Hats across the expansive seas. One Piece begins with the introduction of Luffy, a young boy who wishes to become the Pirate King. To achieve this, he keeps traveling to different places while convincing talented people to join him. So, who are the Straw Hats in One Piece?

The Straw Hats are the main characters in One Piece, and follow the protagonist Luffy across his adventures in the series. Let us take a closer look at each of its members.

All 10 Straw Hats in One Piece

The Straw Hats consist of 10 individuals who join Luffy at different points in the story. Each of them had their different dreams but shared the goal of making Luffy the Pirate King. The members of Luffy’s crew include:

1) Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hats and the main protagonist of One Piece. He wants to live life in the most free way possible and believes the way to achieve this is by becoming the King of Pirates.

He is the strongest member of his crew, owing to the consumption of Devil Fruit, and also has an immeasurable amount of trust in his crewmates. This leads Luffy to never give up on them, even if had to face a Warlord of the Sea or an Emperor.

2) Roronoa Zoro

Zoro was the second person to join the Straw Hat crew and was saved by Luffy from the Marines. Taken in by Luffy’s personality, Zoro decided to join him while chasing his objectives.

Zoro is the second strongest member of the Straw Hats and wishes to become the greatest swordsman in the world. He uses the Three Sword Style technique to face opponents and considers Mihawk his greatest rival.

3) Nami

Nami is a former cat burglar who joined the crew as their navigator. She had initially tricked Luffy into buying back her village but ended up getting betrayed by Arlong. However, Luffy had already realized her struggles and ended up helping her. This won over Nami and she decided to join his crew. As her dream had been to map the world, she could also achieve this by traveling with Luffy.

While Nami is weak compared to the other members of the Crew, she is among the most dedicated to her captain. This was shown in the Wano Arc, where she endured Ulti’s beating but steadfastly refused to deny that Luffy would become the Pirate King.

4) Usopp

Usopp is the sniper of the Straw Hats and one of its more cowardly members. He was initially known to lie and spin tall tales to others. At the same time, Usopp is still a very compassionate and selfless individual who would fight his fears for those he cares about.

Usopp was the only member to be expelled from the crew, but he was still dedicated to Luffy and begged him to be let back. Although he was quite weak during the early episodes of the series, he worked hard during the time-skip to become a more proficient fighter. This helped him in getting closer to his ambition of being a great warrior of the sea.

5) Vinsmoke Sanji

Since Luffy loved to eat in great quantities, the Straw Hats required a talented Chef to join them. This was when they ran into Sanji in the Baratie Arc.

Sanji is a talented fighter but refuses to fight against women. Despite having a very tragic past, he always put his crew ahead of himself. He was willing to sacrifice his freedom in the Whole Cake Island Arc to save his friends.

While Sanji’s dream had been to travel and find the All Blue, it has not been addressed very deeply in One Piece.

6) Tony Tony Chopper

Tony Tony Chopper is the cutest Straw Member who joined the crew as its sixth member. He is a doctor and medical genius who has saved the Straw Hats several times from disaster in One Piece. He also wishes to become a doctor capable of curing all the diseases in the world.

Additionally, Chopper can also use three different forms granted by his Devil Fruit to be useful during battle.

7) Nico Robin

Nico Robin enlisted in the Straw Hats at the end of the Arabasta Arc. She was initially an antagonist in the Baroque Works but later joined the crew after Crocodile’s defeat.

Robin is the Archaeologist of the Straw Hats and hopes to discover the secret of the world by discovering the events of the Void Century. By deciphering mysterious Poneglyphs, she also believes that it would lead Luffy to find the One Piece.

8) Franky

Franky is the shipwright of the Straw Hats and a cyborg with remarkable strength and durability. He had initially fought with the pirate crew but ended up collaborating with them to fight the CP9.

As his dream had always been to craft and ship and sail across the world, Franky was finally able to achieve this with the new ship of the Straw Hats – The Thousand Sunny.

9) Brook

Brook is a distinctive member of the Straw Hats as he is a skeleton who came back to life. He acts as the musician of the Straw Hats but is also a skilled swordsman.

His sword style is more elegant compared to Zoro but he works well with him, as seen in their battle against the Flying Fish Riders. His dream was to reunite with his whale friend, Laboon.

10) Jinbe

Jinbe is the most recent member to join the Straw Hats and is a former Warlord of the Sea. He had initially been working under Big Mom but cut his ties with her during the Whole Cake Island Arc.

Wishing to bring peace and equality between the humans and fishmen, and believed this would be achieved by following Luffy. Trained in Fish-Man Karate, Jinbe is one of the stronger members of the crew and proficient in hand-to-hand combat.

Why Are They Called the Straw Hat Pirates?

The Straw Hats Pirates first got their name in the Arabasta Arc of One Piece. They were called this by Smoker and the name originated from the Straw Hat that Luffy wore.

The Straw Hat had signified the search for freedom and was originally worn by Gol D. Roger – the original King of Pirates. He then passed this hat onto Shanks before it finally reached Luffy.

Since the Straw Hat Pirates were always seeking independence and came together for Luffy’s ambition, the name is very fitting for their crew.

What Is the Straw Hat Grand Fleet?

The Straw Hat Grand Fleet is an alliance of Pirates who come under Luffy’s Straw Hats in One Piece. They first allied to face Doflamingo in the Dressrosa Arc. Following this, they came to share the vision of making Luffy the Pirate King and promised to help him whenever he desired.

The Straw Hat Grand Fleet has over 5000 members and consists of:

  • The Beautiful Pirates
  • The Barto Club
  • The Happy Navy
  • The Ideo Pirates
  • The Tontatta Pirates
  • The New Giant Warrior Pirates
  • The Yonta Maria Grand Fleet

This fleet represented Luffy’s growing influence in the world as well as the first signs that he was finally approaching his goal.

Conclusion

The Straw Hat Pirates are a gathering of unique individuals who often started off on rough terms but came to become a family.

Each of them has their own individuality and personal ambitions, but the bond they share to make Luffy the Pirate King is touching and shows the impact that the protagonist has on the lives of others.
