Gaules, whose real name is Alexandre Borba, is a Brazilian Twitch streamer and former professional Counter-Strike (CS) player and coach. His popularity stems from his deep connection to the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) community and his inspiring personal story. Alexandre was born on December 2, 1983, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is 41 years old as of this writing.
During his childhood, he played football and dreamt of getting into a football club. However, he had a knee injury that prompted him to choose another hobby. Alexandre settled for video games as they gave him the same feeling as playing football. His in-game name was coined by his mother as she called him by his nickname “Gaules.”
He used to visit a gaming center NaN Tatuape, where Borba saw a team play and asked them to give him a chance to prove himself. He often got rejected, but later the owner decided to give him a spot on the academy team. In July 2001, the Brazilian decided to form his own team called ‘generationX.’ g3X got sponsored by Intel and was one of the best Brazilian teams till 2007. MIBR later picked up the g3x roster under their banner and asked for 6 players; in a selfless act, Gaules decided to give up his player spot and became a coach for the team. Under the coaching of Borba, the MIBR team won many big tournaments and was the top team at the time.
In 2008, Gaules left esports for a marketing job at Samsung for 2 years. He left Samsung for his passion for esports and created a big league in Brazil. In 2017, due to financial problems, Gaules was diagnosed with clinical depression. Alexandre attempted suicide in late 2017 but stopped at the thought of doing something big.
Legacy of Gaules
In 2018, Gaules turned to Twitch as a form of therapy. Starting with modest viewership, he built a loyal fanbase by streaming CS:GO matches, sharing stories, and engaging deeply with his audience. His authenticity resonated with viewers, especially those facing challenges of their own.
“I stopped and thought that even that I couldn’t do, so it meant that there was something very big coming. That’s when I decided to transform that situation. I had no partner, no girlfriend, no job, no money in the bank, and no place to live. That’s when I discovered that I had built a story that was priceless.”
Alexandre told himself that he would stream as if it was the last day of his life. Gaules started streaming on Twitch in January 2018. He found that streaming was therapy for him. In 2018, he streamed E-League and found a breakthrough with over 3000 viewers. He started breaking records rapidly and became the #1 CS:GO streamer.
Gaules streams major CS:GO tournaments and smaller regional events, promoting grassroots esports. His influence extends beyond gaming; he has used his platform for charitable initiatives and earned recognition as a key figure in Brazil’s streaming and esports culture. When he gained financial stability, Gaules helped those in need. He donated around $40,000 during COVID times.
Borba actively revolutionized the Brazilian CS scene by pioneering roles such as coaching, establishing esports organizations, and creating opportunities for local players and tournaments. Through his innovative contributions, he reshaped the community and left a lasting legacy. His hardworking nature and commitment to improving the Brazilian scene have made him successful.
