Dan Clancy or Daniel J. Clancy became the CEO of Twitch in 2023, following the resignation of the last remaining co-founder, Emmett Shear.
In 2023, when Emmett Shear resigned from Twitch, he announced through a blog post that former Twitch president Dan Clancy will be taking over as the CEO. A lot of people in the streaming community welcomed Shear’s departure as they were unhappy with some of the policies of the platform.
Dan Clancy holds a BA degree in Computer Science along with a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence. While in school, Clancy also worked with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Xerox Webster Research Center. He gained notable experience at NASA before he moved to Google and became the Engineering Director for Google Books. While working with Google, he also acted as their spokesperson during their lawsuit with the Authors Guild.
Dan Clancy then joined Nextdoor in 2014 as Vice President of Product and Engineering. He was responsible for leading the engineering, product, and data science teams as an executive member. Later, he left the social media site in 2018. In 2019, he joined Twitch as their Vice President of creator and community experience.
Dan Clancy’s Twitch Journey
Soon Dan Clancy became the President of Twitch’s parent company, Twitch Interactive. Apart from this, he was also overlooking product, engineering, and go-to-market functions. Clancy was the one to announce the 50/50 subscription split from the previous 70/30, which lowered the streamer’s cut. Twitch’s Vice President of Global Creators left the company on the same day following the departure of the company’s chief content officer, Mike Aragon, and chief operating officer, Sara Clemens.
This major change was criticised by everyone in the community, including competitor streaming platforms like YouTube. Later, in June 2023, Twitch announced a Partner Plus Program where streamers with 350 non-gifted recurring subscriptions for 3 consecutive months will receive a 70/30 split for a year. However, both Shear and Dan Clancy have been more product-focused rather than being creator-focused.
Recently, in November 2024, a US Congressman sent a letter to Twitch, addressing the streamer HasanAbi for antisemitism. Dan Clancy himself had been dealing with accusations of antisemitism and Islamophobia and was called out for supporting streamers like Sneako and Fresh & Fit. He took to Twitter to refute these claims and said,
“I want to make clear that Twitch stands firmly against hate and harassment of any form.”
Dan Clancy’s statement appeared to be a direct reply to Ritchie Torres’ letter. In his statement, he acknowledged the allegations of hateful content being allowed on the platform. Additionally, he stated that Twitch does not condone hate of any kind, including antisemitism and Islamophobia. The statement said,
“Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen members of the community voice concerns about how we handle potentially harmful content. There is no place on Twitch for racism, hatred, or harassment of any kind, including antisemitism and Islamophobia.”
