Everything you need to know about Master Rank hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds, and whether it will be available at launch, or not.
Master Rank hunts are a staple of the mainline Monster Hunter series. Introduced with Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne expansion, the Master Rank hunts essentially offer an entirely new progression for the end-game. Instead of grinding for the High Rank (or Low Rank) parts and gear, the Master Rank offers players a more fleshed-out end-game content, complete with its own set of rewards. Following Monster Hunter World Iceborne, Master Rank hunts were also introduced in Monster Hunter Rise, with its Sunbreak expansion. Naturally, with Monster Hunter Wilds’ release on the horizon, fans might be wondering whether Master Rank will be making a return in the upcoming title or not.
Unfortunately, as of writing this article, Capcom has not confirmed anything regarding the Master Rank hunts for Monster Hunter Wilds. However, that’s not to say that the feature won’t be making a return from the past mainline titles. Given the significance of Master Rank in Monster Hunter, it’s very likely it will be offered as a post-release content update. Here’s everything you need to know about Master Rank hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What Are Master Rank Hunts in Monster Hunter?
Master Rank Hunts are essentially end-game quests that unlock after you go through all the Low and High-Rank content. Master Rank was introduced to the series with Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne expansion as a way for Capcom to give players a new progression to work towards. In Iceborne, the Master Rank content is limited to hunting quests. Apart from the hunts and the campaign expedition, Iceborne’s optional content is relegated to Low and High Ranks. Even the game’s daily bounties don’t take advantage of the new progression system. However, Capcom expanded further on the Master Rank progression with Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak.
Apart from offering an entirely new progression system for players to work towards, the Master Rank quests are also the highest form of challenge any Monster Hunter game has to offer. In Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, the Master Rank quests aren’t just relegated to Hunts. Instead, Master Rank content also includes Anomaly Investigations and optional Expedition quests.
In both Monster Hunter World and Rise, Master Rank (MR) is separate from a Hunter’s, well, Hunter Rank (HR). For the uninitiated, the Hunter Rank (HR) is essentially a designation and sign of progress that players make in a Monster Hunter game. Think of it like your Hunter’s “level.” The Hunter Rank isn’t tied to any particular quest ranking, i.e., Low, High, or Master Ranks. As you progress through the base game of Monster Hunter World or Rise, you will gain higher Hunter Ranks, regardless of the quests you tackle.
However, Master Rank (MR) is only gained by completing Master Rank quests. You won’t gain any experience towards Master Rank for completing Low or High-Rank quests and hunts. In simple terms, Master Rank is essentially a DLC-exclusive progression system in modern Monster Hunter games.
Is Master Rank Coming to Monster Hunter Wilds?
As of writing this article, Capcom has not revealed any information related to Master Rank, and that’s understandable. Given Master Rank has always been a part of post-release expansion, it isn’t something Capcom currently has on cards for Wilds. Master Rank is something that Capcom kept reserved for expansions in both Monster Hunter World and Rise. The Japanese publisher has not mentioned any details for Monster Hunter Wilds’ post-release. However, it’s safe to assume the game will receive some form of expansion, alongside Master Rank, in the future. Currently, Capcom’s primary focus is the base game’s Low and High-Rank content.
Monster Hunter Wilds is scheduled to be released on February 28, 2025. The game will be available on all current-generation systems, i.e., PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
