Making and using stairs in Minecraft helps players move smoothly and utilize materials creatively for both function and design.

Climbing to higher ground in Minecraft often involves holding the jump button as you hop up one block at a time. The process can become especially bothersome when carried out in well-trodden areas like within your base, mine, or farm. However, stairs serve as a cost-effective and efficient solution to this issue. With many different material options, stairs also play a role in creative designs. Crafting and using them can elevate your building game—literally.
Ingredients for Crafting Stairs in Minecraft
You can craft Stairs using a variety of building blocks. They are:
- Wooden Planks (any type: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, dark oak, acacia, cherry, etc)
- Stone Blocks (such as stone, cobblestone, sandstone, granite, diorite, andesite, etc)
- Nether Blocks (Nether bricks, blackstone, basalt, etc)
- Other Construction Blocks (quartz, prismarine, purpur, etc.)
An easy check for whether any material can be turned into stairs is the stonecutter. If the material can be placed in the stonecutter, it will display the option to convert it into stairs.
Stairs Crafting Recipe

Once you have gathered your preferred material (you’ll need 6 blocks of the same type), open the crafting table and arrange them in a stair-step pattern on the grid:
- First Row: Block | (Empty) | (Empty)
- Second Row: Block | Block | (Empty)
- Third Row: Block | Block | Block
This layout yields 4 stairs. If you use the stonecutter, it will produce 6 stairs, one for each block used. The crafting recipe is not required while using a stonecutter, but it does not work with wood.
How To Use Stairs in Minecraft

Here is how stair placement works:
- When facing the side of a block, right-click (use button) the stairs on the lower half of the block’s face to place them right-side up. Right-click the upper half of the block to place stairs upside down.
- When placing stairs on the top of a block, they will always be placed right side up, facing you.
Stairs serve both functional and aesthetic purposes:
- Smooth Climbing: You can sprint up stairs without jumping, which helps conserve hunger and makes travel smoother. If you haven’t built powered rails to ascend from your mine yet, a single line of stairs will allow you to sprint up rather than jump each block.
- Roof Designs: Place stairs upside-down or in patterns to shape detailed roofs and arches.
- Waterlogged Stairs: On your farm, place stairs or slabs on the blocks below the water to waterlog them. This will create a half-block-wide channel of water, giving you more space to walk. Neither you nor any items will fall into the water.
