Potions are one of the most useful resources available to you in Minecraft. They are useful for combat, exploration, survival, and other scenarios as well. Brewing them, however, can be quite complex. And figuring out their recipe on your own is a tall task.

Fortunately for you, this guide is here to show you how you can brew a potion of harming, one of the more complex potions in Minecraft. Here is how you can brew a potion of harming.

Potions of harming are secondary potions, meaning they are a modified version of an already existing potion. While almost all potions use awkward potions as a base, potions of harming use potions with actual effects as their base. Awkward potions can be brewed by combining water bottles with Nether Warts in the brewing stand.

A potion of harming will require either a potion of healing or a potion of poison as its base. A potion of healing can be brewed by using a glistering melon slice with an awkward potion in the brewing stand. A glistering melon slice is crafted by surrounding a melon slice with eight gold nuggets in the crafting table.

A potion of poison, on the other hand, can be brewed by combining an awkward potion with a spider eye.

Once you have either the potion of healing or the potion of poison, put them in the brewing stand together with a fermented spider eye to brew a potion of harming. Additionally, you will need Blaze Powder to start any reactions in the brewing stand.

A potion of harming deals six damage to any creature that drinks it. At level two, it deals 12 damage instead. As you can tell, this is not very useful on its own. However, by brewing a potion together with gunpowder, it becomes a splash potion, which applies its effect when thrown.

A splash potion of harming is one of the most effective ways of damaging enemies, as its damage is not resisted by armor. A splash potion of harming can be made into a lingering potion by brewing it together with Dragon’s Breath, obtained from the Ender Dragon. This deals massive constant damage to creatures within its area.

You can use a lingering potion of harming to craft tipped arrows. Arrows of harming can be very useful for combating enemies wearing armor, as they guarantee a minimum of 12 damage, no matter what. Note that if an arrow would deal more than 12 damage normally, it does not do additional damage. The instant damage effect only rounds up the damage to 12.
