Learn how to grow trees using saplings and bonemeal in Minecraft. Also discover the lesser-known method to grow giant trees.

Trees are the first resource that we harvest in Minecraft, using their wood to create a crafting table followed by tools, weapons, and a world of items. They have several varieties and are a renewable resource because of the saplings they produce. Breaking a tree’s leaves has a chance to drop saplings.
The leaves also drop saplings if their tree’s trunk is cut and they begin to decay. By planting these saplings, you can grow new trees of the corresponding variety. But waiting for trees to grow can be slow. Fortunately, there is a way to speed things up with the help of bone meal.
How To Make Bone Meal in Minecraft

Bone meal acts like an instant fertilizer in Minecraft and has a chance to instantly grow a sapling into a full-fledged tree. There are two main methods of making bone meal in Minecraft:
Bones
Placing a bone in a crafting grid will yield three bone meal. Bones are dropped by skeletons, which spawn in dark areas or at night. Defeating a skeleton has a chance to drop 1–2 bones. To increase the number of bones dropped, use a weapon with the looting enchantment.

Composter
A composter can turn nearly any plant-based organic material into bone meal. Fill seven layers of a composter to get one bone meal. This approach is especially feasible if you have a farm that produces excess seeds or crops.
How To Use Bone Meal to Grow Trees in Minecraft

Once you’ve collected some bone meal, using it on a sapling is simple. Hold the bone meal and right-click (use button) on the sapling. Green stars will appear around the sapling to indicate that bone meal has been used. Each bone meal has a chance to instantly grow a sapling into a tree. Most saplings will grow into trees after just one or two applications. However, saplings need to have certain conditions met before they can grow into trees.
Sapling Growth Conditions
- Saplings can grow in any biome and on any variety of dirt.
- A sapling must have a light level of 7 to grow. Alternatively, it can grow if it is directly under the sky, or with transparent blocks like glass in between.
- You can grow trees in the Nether as well as the End as long as you have dirt to place the saplings on and sufficient light.
- Make sure there’s at least six blocks of vertical space above the sapling. Trees won’t grow if blocks are in the way.
Place torches or light sources nearby to allow saplings to grow underground. - Avoid planting saplings too close together unless you want a dense tree farm, which can make harvesting more difficult.
How To Grow Giant Trees in Minecraft

Jungle, spruce, and dark oak saplings can grow into giant trees with 2×2 log trunks. To grow a giant tree, plant four saplings of the same variety in a square. Plant them in the open or ensure that there is enough space above. Use bone meal on any one of the saplings until they grow into a giant tree. If you don’t use bone meal, the tree will still grow in time.
