While the game equips you with powerful weapons, it also introduces a special upgrade called Shield Runes, first available in Chapter 9: Ancestral Forge. How To Obtain All Runic Attacks for Shield Saw in DOOM The Dark Ages

You unlock the Shield Runes ability first time during the Ancestral Forge chapter, alongside the Ground Fissure Rune as a part of the cut-scene. Additionally, you can unlock more Runes in the subsequent chapters by interacting with a tub containing green-glowing liquid. Since these tubs appear as active objectives, you won’t miss them.

All Runes and Their Upgrades in DOOM The Dark Ages

Each Shield Rune has three upgrades, and their power and effectiveness increase for each upgrade. You can purchase the Shield Rune upgrades from the Sentinel Shrines, similar to the weapon upgrades.

The following sections explain the different upgrades of each Shield Rune and what they do. 

Ground Fissure

• Aftershock: The distance Ground Fissure travels is increased.
• Wavefront: Demons hit by the Ground Fissure are scorched and drop armor.
• Megathrust: The size and damage of the Ground Fissure is increased.

Holy Swarm

• Outbreak: Summon additional ethereal daggers and increase dagger damage.
• Upsurge: Summon even more ethereal daggers and increase dagger damage.
• Plague: Summon the maximum amount of ethereal daggers and increase dagger damage.

Auto Turret

• Extended Magazine: The duration of the Auto Turret is increased.
• Health Extractor: Demons damaged by the Auto Turret drop health.
• Rapid Fire: The Auto Turret rate of fire and damage per shot is increased. 

Heaven Splitter

• Induction: The stun duration of the Heaven Splitter is increased. 
• Megaburst: The area affected by the Heaven Splitter is increased. 
• Gigawatt: Demons affected by the Heaven Splitter also gain the effect of Shock. Shocked demons take increased damage from your attacks.
