The parry mechanic is a new addition in DOOM The Dark Ages, and this article explains everything you need to know about it.

For the first time, the Slayer has access to a shield in DOOM The Dark Ages. While he is no MCU Captain America, you can parry and throw your shield in this DOOM title. The parry mechanic is unique, and you need to master it in order to effectively fight against enemies, especially in the higher difficulty mode.
As it turns out, the Slayer is actually an expert with the shield, and at parrying. He can protect himself while also dishing out damage, all while maintaining his brutality. In this article, we will mention how you can parry in DOOM The Dark Ages.
How Can You Parry in DOOM The Dark Ages?

You can parry an attack by blocking it at the right moment in DOOM The Dark Ages. You can do this by pressing a singular button (right-click on PC). However, there are some complexities that you need to keep in mind about the parrying mechanic of this game.
To execute a parry properly, you need to block at the very last moment when the enemy is about to hit you. This bit is standard procedure for most games, and you should be used to this idea by default. However, DOOM The Dark Ages throws an unusual curveball because not all attacks can be parried. Only Hell Surge imbued attacks can be parried, which are denoted by a green glow. This is true for both melee and ranged attacks, and you will only be able to parry these specific ones.

Some ranged attacks are reflected back to the sender if you parry them. If you anticipate the attack and block it anytime before the absolute last moment, the parry will not execute. Instead, it will just become a normal block. Once you unlock Shield Runes, the parry effect will get a massive upgrade, and you will get major value out of it.
Countering in DOOM The Dark Ages

Some ranged attacks, although green in color, can be sent back or countered. This does not count as a parry since you do not need to get the timing right. All you need to do is position yourself correctly and block to reflect this attack back to the owner. For example, the Cannonball shots by the boss Vagary Champion do not rely on precise timing to be reflected. Instead, you can anticipate its path and hold the shield to send it back.
