Doom is a series that is often associated with mindless combat. Players unfamiliar with the series often conflate the mindless violence with a lack of depth, and Doom The Dark Ages is out to prove the detractors wrong. The game features some of the most complex combat the series has ever seen, ensuring no two players play the same way. This immense diversity in builds and playstyles is best represented with the Combat Shotgun.

The Combat Shotgun is the weapon you start the game with. The game then proceeds to buff you up with stronger weapons, seemingly demoting the Combat Shotgun to a mere starter weapon. That is not the case, however, as is seen with the weapon’s upgrade tree. The weapon has two prominent upgrades: the Tune Up and the Flare Up. Both these upgrades buff the weapon to a whole new level, but which one should you choose?

We recommend picking the Flare Up skill as it is perfect for horde management. We shall discuss this in detail below.

What upgrade you pick highly depends on how you choose to play the game. The Tune Up skill turns the Combat Shotgun into a rapid-firing weapon, shooting a burst of three shells. This makes the weapon an absolute killer at close range. The Flare Up skill, on the other hand, applies instant Burn to fodder enemies. Burned enemies drop armor pick-ups, which are essential if you wish to survive.

In our case, we went with the Flare Up. Combat encounters were tense, and we used the Flare Up’s instant burn to farm armor whenever needed. This helped us last in the battle longer and helped turn the tide of many battles. Paired with the Blast skill, the Flare Up becomes even more lethal. This combo causes the enemies to explode in a single shot and is ideal for hordes.

The Tune Up skill, on the other hand, makes it much easier to deal with individual, stronger demons. There’s no wrong answer here. It all depends on the type of enemy you wish to use the weapon against. We’d recommend the Flare Up overall, as it makes it easier to clear out hordes and single out the larger enemies.
