Incendiary
This upgrade lets you access higher tiers, and honestly, without this upgrade, the combat shotgun is not really a viable option. For 50 gold, you can upgrade your shotgun to burn enemies and drop armor. This lets your shotgun be an armor-farming, demon-burning machine for longer fights and encounters.
For the next tier, the best options are Smelt or Blast. Both of these upgrades focus on more armor drop rates vs. more AOE (area of effect) damage. So, you can choose any that you prefer.
Smelt
While the other upgrade (Blast) is crucial for taking down a crowd of demons, the Smelt upgrade will help you survive throughout the fight. Besides, there are other guns that can help you maintain your AOE damage in the game. Smelt, on the other hand, amplifies the drop rates of your armor plates.

Tune-up

The upgrade costs 1 Ruby and provides a triple-action burst fire to your combat shotgun. At this point, you can conserve ammo for heavier enemies and use the Combat Shotgun to clear endless mobs of demons that cross your path.
Eat This!
If more means better, then this upgrade will surely be the best. This final upgrade to your combat shotgun increases projectile count and will start hitting hard against the late-game cyber-demons and bosses. For one Wraithstone, this upgrade makes the combat shotgun a heavy-hitting machine.
