Eliminate every member of Cheydinhal Sanctuary in ‘The Purification’ quest of Oblivion Remastered, and earn the immortal horse, Shadowmere.
The tenth mission in the Dark Brotherhood’s questline, ‘The Purification,’ is a memorable part of the faction’s story. The quest begins when you speak with Ocheeva at the Cheydinhal Sanctuary. She informs you that she has received a letter from Lucien bearing instructions from the Black Hand itself. To receive further details, you must head to Fort Farragut, north of Cheydinhal.
Oblivion Remastered The Purification – Meet Lucien
Upon reaching Fort Farragut, use the secret entrance northwest of the fort’s tower inside a hollowed-out tree. This will lead you directly to Lucien, skipping most of the traps and mobs in the fort. When you speak to him, the Black Hand’s Speaker declares that the Brotherhood is compromised and a purge of the Sanctuary is in order. He awards you the title of Silencer, a position that elevates you above the Five Tenets. You are to kill all Dark Brotherhood members at the Sanctuary, barring Schemer and the Dark Guardian.

You can use any means to eliminate your targets, but the best course of action is to isolate them and deal with them individually. This is especially true for the heaviest hitters at the Sanctuary, who include Vicente, Gogron gro-Bolmog, and Teinaava.
They can be attacked in their sleep to get a few free hits in before the battle begins. Use sneak attack damage, buffing potions, and poisons like Damage Health to make short work of them before anyone else can join the fight. The Vampires are weak to fire damage, so use fire spells and equipment enchanted with fire. You can also reverse-pickpocket garlic into their inventory to cause weakness. Keep in mind that killing Vicente will block off the ‘Darkness Eternal’ quest, and killing Teinaava will do the same for ‘Renegade Shadowscale.’
You can also make use of poisoned apples to eliminate some of the Dark Brotherhood members in the most dishonorable way possible. This can be done by placing the poisoned apples in their inventory with reverse-pickpocketing or replacing all food on the table with poisoned apples. However, this trick is heavily dependent on the NPCs’ AI functioning normally and eating the food closest to them at mealtimes.
If nothing else works, you can also aggro the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary members and lure them outside to let the guards deal with them while you sip on Argonian Bloodwine. Once everyone is dead, return to Lucien.
Conclusion and Rewards
Lucien informs you that your contracts will now be delivered via dead drops rather than face-to-face. As a reward, Lucien hands you the reins to his horse, Shadowmere. In addition to being far quicker than your starting horse, Shadowmere is a quest-essential horse, which means it cannot die. The Speaker of the Black Hand then reveals the location of your first dead drop, and the killing continues.
