Cyberpunk 2077 is infamous for its problematic state upon release. Since then, the developer’s tireless work has turned the game into a massively successful title. After the release of the DLC Phantom Liberty and the animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the RPG reappeared on many people’s radar and generated a huge interest in the potential sequel to the game.

This interest culminated in CDPR announcing Project Orion back in October 2022. Which is now confirmed to be in pre-production under the name of Cyberpunk 2.

CD Projekt Red Announces Cyberpunk 2’s Pre-Production Phase

Cyberpunk’s sequel was a topic of discussion since its announcement in October 2022 as Project Orion. Since then, CDPR employees and the studio’s recent job listings have revealed only bits and pieces about the title to gamers. However, the developers have revealed the new state of the project just recently.

CD Project Red has recently confirmed that Cyberpunk 2, formally known as Project Orion, is now officially in pre-production through a post by CDPR’s Investor Relations account on X.

For people who aren’t familiar with the term, pre-production refers to the period that takes place after the conceptual phase and before full production. During it, the creators finalize the concepts, themes, and various elements of gameplay from the previous phase. Also, studios often assign developers and build teams for the project during pre-production. This process, however, is not a short one and could take years, so fans should not expect to see more about the game anytime soon.

As per reports, we currently know that CDPR’s new studio in Boston is working on Cyberpunk 2, with additional help from Warsaw and Vancouver. However, aside from Project Orion, the studio currently has their hands full with multiple projects, including Witcher 4, the Original Witcher Remake, a multiplayer title in the Witcher universe, and a brand new IP.

Reports have also suggested that only 96 people are currently working on the pre-production of Cyberpunk 2, while the rest of the workforce is assigned to different titles. Most of CDPR’s developers are reportedly working on The Witcher 4, which is in full production and might get a date in 2027.

Players Might Have To Wait a Long Time To Play Cyberpunk 2

It is unclear whether the studio will move Cyberpunk 2 into full production before the Witcher 4’s release or if the game will have its pre-production status intact for the foreseeable future. If CDPR decides to do the latter, then fans might have to wait till 2030 to experience Cyberpunk 2. However, details regarding the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 remain a mystery and leave gamers only with speculations.
