In this guide, we’ll explain how you can capture BTs in Death Stranding 2. Doing so will earn you one of the game’s trophies.

In Death Stranding 2, Sam will have to face off against the Beached Things (BTs) once more after the events of the first game. While avoiding them is still an option in most situations, sometimes, you’ll have to fight them. The game also allows you to capture some types of BTs if you want, and doing so the first time around will earn you one of the trophies. In the following guide, we’ll explore how you can capture BTs in Death Stranding 2 and what purpose they serve.
How To Capture BTs in Death Stranding 2

You will need special equipment to capture a BT, specifically the EX Capture Grenade. However, the schematics for this one don’t unlock until quite a bit into the game. You will need to complete Order Number 33, where Sam connects the Metagenomist to the Chiral Network. After this quest is over, you can visit any of the Prepper Stations across the map to craft the EX Capture Grenade. You’ll need the following materials to craft it.
- 30x Resin
- 120x Chiral Crystals
- 25x Special Alloy
Equip the grenade and then visit one of the BT areas, which you can identify by the Timefall marked regions. You will need to get dragged into the tar by the BTs to start fighting them. However, keep in mind that the EX Capture Grenade will only work on larger BTs, such as the Catcher. So, if you’re in a fight with a Catcher, get the enemy’s health down to critical levels. When you notice their health bar turn red, you can throw the EX Capture Grenade into the Catcher’s mouth.
As soon as the grenade hits their open mouth in this critical condition, the Catcher will crystallize. They will drop a white crystal, which you can collect. This is the crystal you’ll need to summon a captured BT later on. As you defeat a BT this way, you will also unlock the BT’s Best Friend trophy.

What Can You Do With Captured BTs?
Captured BTs can aid you in your fights against other large BTs. When you are dragged into the tar the next time and a large BT spawns to engage you in a fight, you can simply go into the Special Tools menu and choose the white crystal of your captured BT. Next, press X to confirm your selection, and the allied BT will spawn by your side to fight against the foe.
However, if you don’t intend to capture a BT, you can sometimes get rid of them by cutting their umbilical cords. Or, you can sneak past them by holding Sam’s breath and moving slowly.
