Fighting the Yotei Six is not easy, but The Way of the Dual Katana quest prepares Atsu for Saito. Saito is a demon on the battlefield who holds a personal grudge against Atsu’s family. As Atsu, you need to level the playing field by learning the deadly Dual Katana technique from Hanbei, the legendary swordsman.

The problem is that Hanbei has been off the radar. He disappeared into the mountains and has not been heard from since. In this quest, you must scale the treacherous terrain of Mount Yotei, find Hanbei, seek his training, and get closer to defeating the Yotei Six.

The Mountain Trail

This path is fairly simple and marked on the map for you, directly west of Shikotsu Woods. Head towards the objective marker, and you’ll find Saito’s men on patrol, scouring the area for Hanbei. Finish the men off with a quick standoff, and proceed through the Mountain Trail.

After squeezing through the rocks on the trail, you’ll fall into your first pit trap. Use your grappling hook to climb your way out. Hanbei has set a ton of these on the trail, so be careful as you tread across.

Follow the lamps along the trail, and you’ll then run into the wolf you met earlier. He’ll howl and disappear back into the forest. Squeeze through the rocks right under where he was standing. This will initiate a short cutscene detailing Atsu’s journey through the trail to the Mount Yotei cliffside.

Mount Yotei

From this point, the path is linear and clearly marked for climbing. Head straight along the path and grapple across the large gap ahead of you. Continue ahead, and you’ll reach the slopey side of the mountain. Stick to the horizontal surfaces and avoid the slopes

Follow the sharp terrain and you’ll spot Hanbei’s hideout in the distance. Climb your way up, and make sure to loot the chest along the way. This will give you Steel, which you can use to upgrade. Follow the trail to Hanbei’s House.

As soon as you drop into the courtyard, Atsu will note the ordinary nature of the house. It seems unlike a home belonging to a famed Katana master. Circle the area on the right and enter the house from behind. You will find a katana to interact with.

Before you can touch the katana, Hanbei interrupts. He threatens to kill you but sheaths his sword when he learns of your past. He is reluctant to teach the Dual Katana technique, but you must follow him despite his hesitation.

Follow Hanbei along the cliffside and reflect on the past. Your walk leads to a training arena where Hanbei asks you to wield the sword.

Hit the Coals

Hanbei will notice that your left arm is weak and demands that we train it right away. To do so, he’ll use a strange training technique where he asks you to slice through the coals he throws at you. The process is fairly simple: Hanbei will sit down, lift the coal up, toss it at you, and you have to time and press the Square button to slice through

The timing of the coals may throw you off a bit. Press the square button just as the coals begin their downward arc to land the perfect shot. Complete this about 10 times. Missing some coals is expected. Once you miss a good chunk of the coals, a cutscene will play where Hanbei will ask you why you wish to be trained. You can then choose to answer “Vengeance for us both” or “To honour my father.”

Left Arm Training

To wield the Dual Katanas, your left arm needs to be just as strong as your right. Hanbei feels you have a long way to go, so your next day begins by training your arm with some bamboo. This is the standard bamboo cutting sequence, but with just your left arm. You have to press the following buttons to cut the bamboo:

  • L1, L3, D-Pad Up.
  • L1, L3, D-Pad Up, D-Pad Down, D-Pad Right.

After this, a small training montage cutscene will play, detailing more of the training’s struggles. The cutscene will also go over Saito, and you’ll have to make some dialogue choices along the way. The cutscene ends with Hanbei saying the training resumes at dawn.

The next morning, you’re back at the bamboo and have to go through the same chores:

  • L1, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Down.
  • L1, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Down, D-Pad Right, D-Pad Up.
  • L1, D-Pad Left, D-Pad Down, D-Pad Right, D-Pad Up, L1, L3.

After the training sequence, you are transported into a flashback with Jubei. You have to pick mushrooms with him, which are easy to spot because of their pinkish color. Acquire the mushrooms and cut through the long grass. A wolf will howl, and since you are just a child here, it is best to stay hidden.

The wolf will spot you, and before it can lunge, a shot scares it away. Saito then appears, asking you and Jubei to be more careful. Presuming him to be friendly, you lead him to your father.

Along the way, you, Jubei, and Saito collect mushrooms. These mushrooms are found near logs and rocks. Collect them while talking to Saito. As you lead Saito to your home, he reveals his past and quickly turns hostile, showing how the events of that tragic day unfolded. Before the tragedy fully occurs, Hanbei interrupts the flashback, bringing you back to the present.

Back To Training

The next day continues with bamboo training. You have to cut through the bamboo in the following order:

  • D-pad Up, D-pad Left, D-pad Down.
  • D-pad Up, D-pad Left, D-pad Down, D-pad Right, D-pad Up.
  • D-pad Up, D-pad Left, D-pad Down, D-pad Right, D-pad Up, D-pad Left, D-pad Down.

After cutting through all of these, Hanbei takes you back to the coals. Before you do so, he gives you your father’s blade. You then use the Dual Blades to strike all the coals as you did before.

After you’re done with the coals, you’ll then go into a detailed tutorial for the Dual Katanas. You’ll be taught how to switch and when to use the Dual Katana.

Follow Hanbei back to his house after your lesson, and you’ll then get to put your newfound knowledge to the test. His house is under attack, and you’ll have to fight spearmen with the Dual Katana

If you skimmed through the initial lesson, you’re supposed to use the dual katanas against the spearmen and the regular katana against those wielding the same. You can switch between the two stances by pressing and holding R2 and then pressing the corresponding button.  Fight through the hordes and follow the master’s instructions to complete the quest.
