In this article, we’ll explore which horse in Ghost of Yotei you should choose, and how that decision will impact your playthrough.

You can choose and name your own horse in Ghost of Yotei. While you’ll have a horse from the beginning of the campaign, you’ll eventually reach the “Old Trails” quest where Atsu will recall past events and then get the opportunity to pick a horse. In the following article, we’ll explore what horse options the game provides you and whether you should choose a specific one to receive gameplay benefits.
How To Choose Your Horse in Ghost of Yotei
The Old Trails quest begins when you arrive at Atsu’s home. During her home visit, Atsu will remember various things about her past, including how her father and she used to visit the stables west of the river. After that, if you open your map, you’ll see that a point of interest has appeared, marking the location Atsu remembered. So, start making your way there.
Once you get to the stables, you’ll encounter an NPC. Talk to them to trigger a cutscene. After the scene plays out, you’ll have to take out a few of Lord Saito’s men. You can do this stealthily or trigger open combat with them. Either way, after the men are down, you’ll have to follow the NPC to a nearby pond. As soon as you reach this area, a cutscene will trigger, allowing you to relive a portion of Atsu’s past.
In this flashback sequence, the younger Atsu will need to follow a manure track to reach her father, Kengo. He’ll speak to her about a specific “charm.” After that dialogue ends, you’ll need to head back to the stablemaster to end the flashback. Back in the present, Atsu will now whistle, which will cause several horses to come galloping toward her.

Which Horse Should You Choose in Ghost of Yotei?

The following horses will appear after Atsu whistles:
- Dapple Horse
- Black Horse
- White Horse
- Brown Horse (only appears if you own the Deluxe Edition)
You can choose any of the horses listed above. Each of them looks different, but that’s where the differences end. There’s no right or wrong choice, since your choice won’t have any gameplay impact. None of the horses have any distinct advantage or disadvantage. However, keep in mind that the choice you make here is permanent. So, the horse you choose will be your companion for the remainder of the campaign.
After making a choice, you will also get to name your horse. Again, this doesn’t have any gameplay implications whatsoever. Here are the names you can choose from:
- Shimaki (Tornado)
- Mochizuki (Full Moon)
- Homura (Flame)
