In this guide, we will provide players with a walkthrough of the Oni quest in Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.
While Atsu may hate all of the Yotei Six, she bears strong hatred for The Oni, the man who left her for dead. As Atsu, it is now time to deliver justice to this man, but before you can do so, you need to find a way to assassinate him.
The Oni questline is one of the most intriguing questlines in the game and gives a deeper glimpse into her past. This quest is full of twists and turns, so buckle up for the ride. This walkthrough will cover everything you need to do to kill ‘The Oni’ during Chapter 1 of Ghost of Yotei.

Walkthrough for The Oni in Ghost of Yotei (Chapter 1)
The Road To Ishikari Plain
Before you can begin your hunt for The Oni, you need to go to the land where he resides: Ishikari Plain.
- Ride along the Nupur River and make your way to the Golden Foothills. Simply following the river should get you to the location you need to go to. If you somehow get lost, just follow the wind guide to the objective.
- As you head to your objective, you’ll discover a Clan Matsumae checkpoint. The clan guards the gate to Ishikari Plain. You need a permit, and a beggar nearby can help you get it. Bribe the beggar to get the permit, after which you can pass through the gate.
- As soon as you step foot on the other side of the gate, Oni Raiders will begin their assault. Fend off the gate with Lord Kitamori and kill all the raiders. Once that’s done, Lord Kitamori will coerce you into helping him.
- Follow the samurai till you run into a pile of dead horses. Investigate the horses and follow the footprint trail nearby.
- The prints will lead you to a group of raiders. Kill them all and then loot their camp for food. Then, set a campfire and eat the food.
- There’s a BIG REVEAL during this scene that the samurai is your brother, Jubei. After this scene, you have to ride with Jubei, and you will eventually be caught up in an ambush.
- Kill the Oni Raiders and head to the Clan Matsumae camp. Here, you’ll have to complete a bamboo chopping sequence, which will net you the Clan Matsumae Helmet.
- After this, you’ll be dismissed and can go to Ishikari Plain.

Mad Pursuit
As you were leaving the Clan Matsumae camp, Jubei gave you a lead to follow in a market nearby.
- Enter Ishikari Plain and use your spyglass to identify the market. The market, Ishikari Market, is towards the northwest, right under the hill with the castle.
- Head to the market and to the Mad Goro bounty on the notice board. Right after this, you’ll have to fight a few Oni Raiders who are harassing a Sake House Barman.
- Talk to the Sake House Barman and he will offer you a drink.
- Sit in the bar and eavesdrop, and you’ll be interrupted by Jubei before long. Junbei will attract the unwarranted attention of the Oni Raiders. Fight by Junbei’s side and kill all the raiders.
- Jubei wants to help catch the Mad Goro bounty, so head with him to Iwami Village.
- Ask the villagers of Mad Goro, and they will tell you about gunfire near Bear Rock. Head to Bear Rock to find Goro’s camp, which you then have to investigate. Ronin bounty hunters will interrupt your investigation, and you then have to fight them off.
- Upon defeat, the Ronin will lead you to a nearby river. As you follow Mad Goro’s trail by the river, you’ll run into a group of Oni Raiders on the same. Defeat the Oni Raiders and investigate the site.
- Upon investigation, you’ll learn that the raiders were shot at from a nearby cliff. As you head towards the spot, Mad Goro will reveal himself. Chase Mad Goro and defeat him to complete this section.

Belly of the Beast
Jubei took Mad Goro in for questioning, and now it’s your turn to get your hands on the murderer.
- Head to Ishikari Market and meet Jubei. Since Jubei couldn’t bring Mad Goro in to you, the plan is now to bait Jubei as a prisoner to draw the Oni’s attention.
- Take Jubei to the Ishikari Castle as your prisoner. Head deep inside the castle, and you’ll personally meet The Oni.
- The Oni will take you into the castle, and you and Jubei will split up. Follow The Oni, and he’ll lead you to his Treasure Room.
- Investigate the treasures in the room, and you’ll have a flashback sequence detailing the tragic night.
- After this, you’ll be back in the courtyard. The Oni’s Jailer stands right opposite you. Sneak up to the Jailer, and he’ll catch you in the act. You then have to fight him in the ring.
- Defeat the Jailer to acquire the keys.
- After this, you’ll have a feast with the Oni Raiders. Once the feast is done, head back to your horse to retrieve your gear.
- With your gear in hand, circle around the main gate from the right and enter the castle. Sneak through the courtyard and head to the Holding Cells to find Jubei.
- Break Jubei out of his cell and use the cliffs to find an alternative path across the castle. Scale across the cliffs to reach the castle scaffolding, and then scale the latter to enter The Oni’s room.
- The encounter with the Oni goes horribly wrong, and you then have to escape Ishikari Castle with Jubei to complete this section.

A Fiery Consequence
With the assassination attempt gone horribly wrong, Mad Goro remains your only lead, and you have to free him from the Matsumae Camp.
- Head to the camp, and you’ll be unceremoniously kicked out. Then, head to the right and you’ll find a bridge under construction. Scale this bridge to reach a vantage point. Use this point to scout for Mad Goro.
- Once night falls, sneak through the camp and head to Mad Goro’s jail cell. Talk to the prisoner, and he’ll offer information if you free him.
- Climb to the roof and jump into the cell. Then, use your grappling hook to break through the cell.
- As you try to escape, Jubei catches you. He’ll then escort you out of the camp. Before you reach the exit, the Oni Raiders will attack.
- Kill the raiders and then head deeper into the camp. Cut through the camp and kill all enemies. You’ll then find a mortar cannon, which you can use to rain down terror on all the raiders.
- Head to the bridge and then defend it with Jubei. The Oni will then attack the bridge, and you’ll be thrown into the water with Jubei.
- Once you wake up, follow Jubei back to the camp to complete this section.

Twin Wolves, Twin Heart
Jubei wants to help you kill the Oni and wants you to meet him at the Northern Mastumai Camp to begin.
- Head to the Northern Mastumai Camp. Head into the camp and you’ll hear Jubei arguing with his commander. Interrupt this conversation, and Jubei will then walk out on the commander with you.
- With Jubei, take your horse and follow his lead on Mad Goro.
- Ride alongside Jubei and head to the Azure Wind Shrine.
- Look to your left and you’ll find bright light coming through. Follow this light to discover an alternate path to the top of the shrine.
- On your way up, you’ll find a few Ronin. Fight alongside Jubei and kill them.
- Once you do, you’ll find that the bridge leading up has been burnt down. Look to your left and you’ll find a grappling path to the other side of the bridge. Parkour across, and then come back to the bridge to clear out the burning rubble. This will create a path for Jubei to cross.
- Cut through the cave along the way, and a bridge inside will break as you cross. This will split Jubei and you, and you have to find a way out on your own.
- Follow the light to find a way out of the cave, and then scale through the cliffside to reunite with Jubei.
- After a touching reunion, head up and you’ll find Mad Goro pretending to be a priest.
- He’ll force you to go through a few rituals, after which a few more Ronin will catch up with you.
- Mad Goro will then abandon the way of the priest and go on a murderous rampage, and you have to fight by his side and kill all the bounty hunters. Then, make your way downhill and escape the shrine, fighting dozens of bounty hunters along the way.
- Talk to Mad Goro at the end to complete this section and unlock the Oni’s Flame.
The Tale of the Oni

Mad Goro told you of a mine on the coast that leads directly into the castle. This is what you’ll use to head inside and assassinate The Oni.
- Head to the coast and you’ll get a lengthy cutscene where you and Jubei reminisce about the past.
- Once that’s done, head into the mine with Jubei and let him lead you till you reach a dead end.
- He’ll then help you climb up to the upper level, and you then have to cross the rafters till you spot a grapple point at the end. Use your hook to break this down and create a path for Jubei.
- The mine will lead you and Jubei out into the cliffside. There are ledges attached to them that you then need to use to get up.
- Keep heading up till you reach a gate with torches. Stop for a moment before the gate, and let a guard pass by. Kill this guard and then head inside.
- You’ll end up in a prison unit. Kill all the guards here and free the Matsumae captives.
- Once the captives are free, use your hook to break the gate and lead the charge into battle.
- Cut through the linear hallways and free all the captives along the way to add to your squad.
- With all the captives by your side, break into the courtyard and annihilate the Oni Raiders.
- After you’re done, there will be a small cutscene where Jubei will leave to join the clansmen. You’ll head your own way and will soon find the jailer blocking your path. Kill the jailer and then enter The Oni’s room.
- Confront the Oni and defeat him in battle to complete the quest. This fight is a pretty straightforward duel with only a fire gimmick in the second half. Avoid the rings of fire and you’ll be fine.
