Ghost of Yotei: All Kitsune Altar Locations and How To Solve Them

In this article, we’ll point you to the locations of all Kitsune Altars in Ghost of Yotei. We’ll also help you solve each puzzle.

You will find four Kitsune Altars in Ghost of Yotei, and each of them will have a Nine Tails puzzle box for you to collect. While there are several more of these puzzle boxes to find, we suggest grabbing the ones in the Kitsune Altars first. The order in which you grab the boxes will determine their types and the solutions.

Thankfully, all of these are in Teshio Ridge, which is the fifth region out of the six that you’ll visit in the game. So, you’ll have to progress quite a bit before you can begin reaching the Kitsune Altars. The following guide should help you locate these.

Where To Find All Kitsune Altars in Ghost of Yotei

Let’s take a look at where the different Kitsune Altars are and how you can complete each puzzle. We suggest following this order when visiting the Kitsune Altars and picking up the overall puzzle boxes. Since the order in which you pick them up will decide the solution for each, following our order should help the solutions align for you.

Shipwreck Shoal

You’ll find the first Kitsune Altar near the coast in the Shipwreck Shoal. Simply follow the easternmost road, and you should find the altar near the rocky cliff. Pick up the puzzle box from the altar. If this is your first Nine Tails puzzle box, it should be the Interesting Box variant. To solve this particular box, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Slide the stripe left.
Step 2: Slide the stripe down.
Step 3: Open the box.

Inside it, you’ll get the Charm of the Wary Opponent.

Sarobetsu Forest

The second Kitsune Altar is just north of the word ‘Sarobetsu’ on your map. You’ll have to go up a snowy path to reach this altar and grab the puzzle box. Open your inventory, and this one should be the Peculiar Box variant if this is your second pickup. Here’s the solution for the Peculiar Box.

Step 1: Slide both of the black strips downward.
Step 2: Open the box.

Inside it, you’ll get 750 Coins.

Sentinel Forest Camp

From the Sentinel Forest Camp, head south and you’ll find another snowy path that leads to one of the Kitsune Altars in Ghost of Yotei. Grab the third puzzle box from the altar. If you’ve picked up the box third, it should be a Fascinating Box. The solution for it is as follows:

Step 1: Slide the stripe to the right.
Step 2: Slide the front downwards.
Step 3: Slide the stripe left.
Step 4: Slide the front downwards.
Step 5: Open the box.

You will get 7x Iron Sand from opening this box.

Teshio Coast

Make your way to a curve that sticks out of the mainland along the Teshio Coast to find yet another snowy sloping path going upwards. Head along this path to find the last Kitsune Altar. If you’ve followed our order, this should be your fourth Nine Tails puzzle box pickup. So, it should be a Curious Box. Follow the steps below to open the box.

Step 1: On all four sides, slide down the black stripes.
Step 2: Open the box.

Opening the Curious Box will give you 1500 Coins.
