Ghost of Yotei’s Building Bridges side quest is a social commentary on the divide between the north and the south of Yotei Grasslands.
Building Bridges is a side quest in Ghost of Yotei that dives deep into the divide brewing between the north and south of the Yotei Grasslands. The northerners hate the influx of the southerners and are protective of their land. This divide, in turn, has allowed criminals such as the Saito Outlaws to run riot over the lands, leaving the lands in a mess.
Building Bridges not only focuses on building an actual bridge, but also on the social bridges between the northerners and southerners of the lands. This guide will walk you through this emotional journey and help you pick the right ending.
How To Start Building Bridges in Ghost of Yotei

You begin the Building Bridges quest by visiting the Matsumae Crossing in the Yotei Grasslands. This bridge is directly north of the Windy Meadow. Once you arrive at this location, you’ll find a couple of Matsumae clansmen talking amongst themselves.
As you approach, the clansmen will try to hire you. You then have the choice to refuse or accept the job. Naturally, if you wish to take on the quest, accept the job. This will begin the quest.
How To Complete Building Bridges in Ghost of Yotei

Once you accept to work for the Matsumae, they’ll tell you about the issue. Clan Matsumae is building a bridge, with a village nearby supplying the resources needed to do so. Lately, however, someone has been sabotaging the operation and burning the bridge. The Matsumae suspect Saito’s outlaws to be the culprit, but they can’t afford to depart with any of their men for patrol.
Equip your spyglass and look at the trees to the right. There’s a spot there you can spend the night in, granting you a vantage point over the bridge. Once you’ve settled on a hiding spot, the settler from the village will persuade you to let him join.
Follow the settler and head to the vantage point. Sit on the spot, and the settler will reveal himself to be Sanjuro. He’ll tell you to sleep, suggesting that he’ll keep watch while you nap. Your nap will be interrupted shortly afterwards by a few Ronin rushing to burn the bridge.
Kill the Ronin, and you’ll then be stopped by Sanjuro. He’ll reveal that he hired the Ronin to burn the bridge as a means of rebellion against the Matsumae. You’ll then have the choice to capture him or let him go.
Should You Capture Sanjuro or Let Him Go in Ghost of Yotei?

Capturing Sanjuro
If you capture Sanjuro, you’ll then handcuff him and take him back to the Matsumae Clansman. He will show mercy, letting Sanjuro leave unharmed, asking him to reflect on his actions. Atsu will then comment that the Matsumae still need to win over the people of the land, and the clansman will agree. This is the best outcome as it puts an end to the anarchy, while showing us the good within the Matsumae. We recommend following this choice.
Let Sanjuro Go
If you let Sanjuro go, you’ll still have to meet the clansman the next day. He will inquire into the incident, learning that Sanjuro was involved. He’ll be upset that he couldn’t persuade the villagers that he truly means good, and the quest will come to an end. This is a less delightful ending, but it doesn’t have any impact on the overall narrative.
