Deckbuilding in the current Pokemon TCG meta can often be quite expensive. However, budget decks can do well competitively without putting a lot of stress on your wallet. In this article, we take a look at some of the cheaper cards that can fit into most decks without costing much.

Best Budget Pokemon TCG Cards

Best Budget Trainer Cards

These Trainer cards find their way into most decks due to their utility and are very cheap:

  • Ultra Ball
  • Professor’s Research
  • Boss’s Orders
  • Iono
  • Rare Candy

1) Ultra Ball

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.10

Ultra Ball is one of the best ways to draw a Pokemon directly from your deck. By discarding two cards from your hand, which can be beneficial for decks like Ceruledge ex or Gardevoir ex, you get to pick a Pokemon of your choice. This card has been reprinted over and over again so finding cheap copies for your deck is fairly easy.

2) Professor’s Research

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.05

One of the best Supporters in the game for drawing cards, Professor’s Research discards your entire hand and lets you draw seven cards. This card has been reprinted many times with different Pokemon Professors, so it is always in circulation.

3) Boss’s Orders

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.13

Boss’s Orders is great for “gusting,” which involves forcibly switching out the opponent’s Active Pokemon for one on their Bench. While other cards have a similar effect, none are as effective or consistent as Boss’s Orders. Like Professor’s Research, this Supporter has been reprinted multiple times with various evil team leaders.

4) Iono

Iono (Image via TPC)

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.31

Iono works well both as a hand disruptor and for hand renewal. If you have a bad hand, you can hopefully get a better one. However, as both players can only draw as many cards as they have Prizes left, it can leave a player with fewer cards in the later stages of a game. Decks like Alakazam are especially vulnerable to this tactic. Copies from Paldean Fates or Paldea Evolved are relatively cheap.

5) Rare Candy

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.09

Rare Candy is an Item card that accelerates decks that use Stage 2 Pokemon cards. Multiple reprints make it easy to get a cheap copy, making it a necessity for many decks.

Best Budget Pokemon Cards

While several Pokemon cards are cheap, they tend to be more specialized depending on the deck. Some low-cost Pokemon cards, however, fit into multiple decks:

  • Budew
  • Squawkabilly ex
  • Shaymin

1) Budew

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.14

Budew is an excellent card to lead off with, as its move Itchy Pollen prevents the opponent from using any Items. As a Baby Pokemon, the move has no cost, and Budew has no Retreat Cost, making it easy to switch in and out.

2) Squawkabilly ex

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.63

Although more expensive than other cards on this list, Squawkabilly ex is a Pokemon ex card. Similar utility cards like Fezandipiti ex ($18.19) and Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex ($1.62) are far more costly. Squawkabilly ex lets you discard and draw six cards on the first turn, making it a useful first-turn play.

3) Shaymin

  • Lowest Price: ~$0.26

Shaymin’s ability protects your Benched Pokemon from taking damage from your opponent’s attacks. This makes it a decent choice for multiple decks. Being relatively cheap, getting a copy is easy.
