Learn how to complete A Drink With a Stranger in Ghost of Yotei, including route steps, rewards, and all hidden collectibles.
In Ghost of Yotei, A Drink With a Stranger is a small side quest. To kick off this quest, head to the Southern Coast of the Yotei Grasslands, just south of Lake Kuttara and Tranquil Falls. You will find a camp near the cliffs, where an elderly Ainu merchant in white robes sits by a campfire. This area lies southwest of the Kuttara Gambling Den, so if you are nearby, keep an eye out for the smoke from his fire.
Once you talk to him, he will tell you how some of Saito’s men harassed him and tossed his Askur, an Ainu version of sake, off the cliff. He calls it his “finest askur this side of Mount Yotei,” but sadly, his old bones can’t climb down to get it. You will learn that the Ainu prefer bartering over using coins, trading goods with people from across the seas, including the ripun people, who crafted the lacquered canteen you are about to retrieve.
When you offer to help, he leads you to the cliff’s edge and points out the climbing route. That’s your cue to get moving.
Steps To Finish A Drink With a Stranger in Ghost of Yotei
The climb to recover the Repunkur Canteen isn’t long, but you will need to stay alert. Start by standing at the cliff’s edge and pressing R2 to lower yourself down the first ledge. You’ll spot a fallen torch below; use it as your first stop.
Next, jump across to a tree branch sticking out from the cliff, then move to the grassy ledge on the opposite side. Walk carefully along the narrow wooden beam ahead, which helps line up your next jumps. Before you go too far, take a moment to look to your left. There’s an optional detour where you can grab some Copper Ore.
Now, keep going until you reach two branches sticking out ahead. Jump to the first one, then quickly to the second. The gap might look too wide, but Atsu can make it. From the second branch, get ready to grapple. You will see a tree stump above with a prompt to press R2. Do it at the right moment to swing up safely to the small platform above.
Once you pull yourself up, you will see the Repunkur Canteen lying on the grass near the bushes. Pick it up to automatically add it to your Ainu Items Collection.
Now that you have got what you came for, don’t bother climbing all the way back down. Instead, take the upper shortcut path to return to solid ground. It’s quicker and safer, and there’s another reward waiting along the way.
As you climb higher, you will come across a Pillar of the Fallen overlooking the ocean. Interact with it to get the Unyielding Tempest sword kit, a permanent cosmetic upgrade for your katana. Once you have collected it, keep following the path up until you’re back at the top. Then return to the merchant and hand him the canteen to finish the quest.
A Drink With a Stranger Mission Rewards
Completing the quest earns you two great rewards:
- Repunkur Canteen: This is a unique Ainu collectible that counts toward the Ainu Items collection (30 total). You will need it if you plan to upgrade the Robes of Sitturaynu armor, which helps you track nearby Ainu items with a green firefly.
- Unyielding Tempest Sword Kit: A purely cosmetic weapon skin found at the Pillar of the Fallen. It’s permanently unlocked once you collect it.
If you took the Copper Ore detour earlier, that’s an extra material bonus too.
