Ghost of Yotei: Pride Before Tea Walkthrough

Learn how to start and complete Pride Before Tea in Ghost of Yotei, including all mission steps, strategies, and armor rewards.

You will find Pride Before Tea once you make it to Oshima Coast during Chapter 2, “The Onryo.” It’s one of the earliest quests you can pick up in this region. To even see the quest, you first need to complete the main story mission, The Saito Brothers. Once that’s done, the coast area opens up, and Ginji, an armorer, becomes available to talk to at Benten Port.

Benten Port sits west of the Matsumae Residences, and Ginji is hard to miss with his setup near the forge. When you talk to him for the first time, he’ll open his shop menu. After you exit, speak to him again. That’s when the actual Sensei Tale begins. It’s easy to walk away after the first interaction, so remember to talk to him twice.

In this article, we will explore everything you need to know about the Pride Before Tea in Ghost of Yotei.

Once the quest starts, you will need to meet Ginji by the bridge just east of the Matsumae Residences. He’ll tell you how he created armor strong enough to deflect rifle fire, but made the mistake of bragging about it. Now the Dragon’s soldiers are hunting him down. Ginji has a plan to sneak back into the Joyo Tea House; he’ll pretend to surrender while Atsu hides in barrels to slip inside unnoticed.

Head to the Tea House Bridge

You will find Ginji waiting near the bridge over the Oyobe River. The area gives you a nice view of the coast and sets up the infiltration that follows. Once his plan is explained, move with him toward the Joyo Tea House.

Take Out the First Wave of Enemies

Outside the tea house, a few Dragon soldiers are patrolling. You can either sneak through the tall grass and take them out quietly or fight them head-on. They mostly use katanas and basic melee weapons, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Using smoke bombs or quick parries keeps things smooth if you prefer direct combat.

Free Ginji From the Attic

After you deal with the guards outside, enter the tea house. Inside, things get tighter; there’s not much room to dodge, so you will need to stay alert. Head to the attic, where Ginji is being held by a single Dragon soldier. Take him out, then interact with Ginji to release him.

Find the Hidden Armor

With Ginji safe, look around the attic. The prototype armor is tucked inside a basket in the corner. Once you grab it, Atsu will automatically equip it. The design looks sleek but practical; lightweight enough to move quickly, yet strong enough to handle rifle shots.

Test the Armor’s Bullet Deflection

As soon as you leave the building, a group of riflemen will open fire. This fight serves as your training session for the armor’s special ability. Hold the block button to deflect bullets; they’ll bounce back toward the shooters. You will need to face them directly and time your blocks carefully. Once you get the rhythm, it’s satisfying to see enemies go down from their own shots.

After you finish the fight, Ginji will thank you, and the quest wraps up. You will keep the new armor set as your reward.

Completing Pride Before Tea gives you the full Ginji’s Guard Armor set, one of the most unique defensive outfits in Ghost of Yotei. It’s built to handle gunfire-heavy fights and gives you a huge survival boost in later chapters.

Here’s what the armor does:

  • Slightly increases rifle reload speed.
  • Lets you deflect bullets back toward enemies by blocking.
  • Cuts projectile damage by about half.

You can upgrade the armor four times using coins and materials.

  • Level 2: Improves reload speed even more (costs 650 Coin).
  • Level 3: Adds Spirit gain when you successfully deflect bullets (costs 1,100 Coin, 10 Textiles, 20 Gun Parts).
  • Level 4: Offers massive projectile resistance (costs 2,000 Coin, 20 Textiles, 10 Rare Metals).

The helmet and mask complete the look, but don’t change stats. Even then, wearing the full set gives a strong visual presence and fits perfectly for players who prefer to block and counter.
