This is by far one of the most meaningful side quests in the game, though it can be easy to miss.

How To Begin A Life To Be in Ghost of Yotei
You begin the A Life To Be quest by rescuing a settler imprisoned by Oni Raiders south of the Bold Kaji Forge. You’ll find the settler shackled in the middle of the forest, surrounded by Oni Raiders. His cries for help are hard to miss.
Kill all the Oni Raiders and rescue the man. Walk up to him and press R2 to untie him. As soon as he is free, he will tell you that the Oni Raiders are also looking for his wife. He will ask for your help in saving her and offer to pay any amount you wish. Once this conversation ends, the quest officially begins.

How To Complete A Life To Be in Ghost of Yotei

Once the settler is free, he’ll lead you to his wife on foot. Follow the man and cut through the forest, and he’ll tell you the tale of his failed escape. He and his wife were workers in the Oni’s Castle but defied the Oni, earning his ire. Now, the tyrant wants to make an example of them, forcing the couple to flee for their lives.
By the time the settler finishes his story, you’ll find yourself in front of a cave. You’ll hear a woman’s cries echoing from inside. A woman will suddenly come out of the cave, giving an update about a baby. It turns out the settler’s wife is about to give birth, and he needs your help to protect her.
Stand guard outside the cave with the settler. After a short while, the Oni Raiders will appear. Fight through several waves of enemies while you hear the woman delivering the baby inside. The fight to the death will be capped off by a newborn’s cries.
Head back into the cave, and you’ll spot the mother holding the baby. The man will thank you for your help, offering all his money in gratitude. You then have the choice to accept or refuse the money. It’s best to refuse the money, as the couple needs it for their daughter. They’ll appreciate your kindness and name the baby Atsu, bringing this heartwarming quest to a close.
