Ghost of Yotei isn’t a traditional action RPG; instead, it’s more of an action-adventure game with some mild RPG elements. That said, there are still plenty of avenues in the game to craft outrageously powerful builds. Furthermore, there’s a ton of flexibility when it comes to different playstyles. While combat in Yotei is mostly focused on melee brawls, you can still craft fairly powerful ranged builds in the game.

In fact, with the right armor and charms, you can make Atsu incredibly lethal at both close quarters and ranged combat. Surprisingly enough, you can craft a fairly viable ranged build for Atsu pretty early in the game. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the best ranged build in Ghost of Yotei, for mid to early-game parts of the story.

Overview of the Best Ranged Build in Ghost of Yotei

For the ranged build, we’re primarily focusing on Atsu’s Short (Hankyu) and Long (Yumi) Bows. While the Teppo (Tanegashima Matchlock) is quite good at dealing damage from a range, it’s significantly slower compared to the Bows. Furthermore, the game has more Bow-related charms for us to use than those for the Teppo. That said, you can still use the Matchlock with this build, albeit with some limitations.

For the armor set, we went with the Dragonfly Armor, for obvious reasons. Also, do note that most of the components for this build can be obtained fairly early in the game. However, we do recommend progressing a bit into the story and unlocking the Dual Katana and Yari before committing to the ranged build. Having access to Yari and Dual Katanas will make the process of obtaining the Dragonfly set much easier.

That said, if you want to beeline to The Undying Samurai quest (for the Dragonfly set), you can do so.

How To Get the Dragonfly Armor Set in Ghost of Yotei?

The Dragonfly armor is obtained from the quest – The Dragonfly Armor. It’s essentially a Tale that you unlock after meeting Danjiro. The Tale can be found in Cairn Forks, which is to the north of Shizunai Woods and Tokachi Range. The Dragonfly Armor quest is fairly lengthy; however, it’s also one of the most narratively engaging Tales in the entire game.

Once you complete the quest (rescue Danjiro), you will be rewarded with the Dragonfly armor set. We highly recommend upgrading the armor to Level 4 as soon as possible, to take full advantage of its ranged skills.

Here’s how you can obtain the charms used in this build:

  • Mother’s Charm: Obtained upon completing the Mount Yotei Shrine climb challenge.
  • Charm of Firewalking: Obtained upon completing the Every Man For Himself Tale in Tokachi Range.
  • Charm of Archer’s Fortune: Obtained upon completing the Warm Plains Fox Den.
  • Charm of Brutal Volley: Obtained upon completing the Grassy Hill Fox Den.
  • Charm of Iron Focus: Obtained upon completing the Archery challenge in Ainu Hunting Grounds, Golden Foothills.

Additional Notes

While not necessary, you can also use the Charm of True Aim in this build. It’s unlocked after completing The Legend of Opusnupuri Tale in Nayoro Wilds. The Charm of True Aim changes the normal aiming reticle for the Yumi, with an auto-lock-on that has a longer charging animation, but deals significantly higher damage. It can essentially one-shot most regular enemies.

And when upgraded to Level 3, it can target up to 3 enemies at once. The only downside is that this charm disables manual targeting and has a longer charging animation.
