Explore The Ainu Kotan quest in Ghost of Yotei, learn to start it, upgrade Sitturaynu robes, and uncover Ainu culture.
You can start The Ainu Kotan quest in Ghost of Yotei once you bump into Konupas, an Ainu merchant who roams around camps in the Tokachi Range. She’s not always easy to find, but the one place you are guaranteed to see her is north of the Mysterious Gate. When you spot her, calm down her horse first; it’s part of her introduction. Once you do, she’ll open up a trade menu and mention Husko Kotan, an Ainu village tucked away in the Nayoro Wilds. That’s your cue to head there.
There’s another way to get started too. If you go straight to Husko Kotan, you will meet Huci, an elder who introduces you to the side tale called The Heart of an Ainu. Here, you help her and Kaeka recover a family heirloom. Completing that quest earns you the Robes for Sitturaynu, a special Ainu outfit that later becomes central to The Ainu Kotan storyline.
To actually reach Husko Kotan, head to the Central Ferry near Tokachi Range’s Great Lake. You will cross the lake with Huci’s help, then travel north through the forests and snowy terrain until you see smoke rising from the village. Once you reach it, you will unlock fast travel, gain access to new merchants, and open up several lore-based quests tied to Ainu culture.
Steps To Finish The Ainu Kotan in Ghost of Yotei

When you are in Husko Kotan, go straight to Kaeka the Weaver. She’s the one who upgrades your Robes for Sitturaynu. To do that, you will need Ainu Items, which are collectibles that glow blue and attract fireflies. There are 30 of them scattered all over Ezo, usually near rivers, broken campsites, twisted trees, and burned houses.
If you are wearing the Robes while exploring, a green firefly will appear and point you toward the nearest Ainu Item. Some of the more notable ones include:
- Mukkuri near the Sarubetsu River, west of the Reliquary of Courage
- Ku-e-shinok Ring north of the Saito Recruitment Camp
- Makiri is on a tiny island in Lake Kuttara
- Raoma under a rock arch along the southern coast
After collecting a few, head back to Kaeka. She upgrades your armor in stages: 5 items for Tier II, 10 for Tier III, and 15 for the full upgrade. Each upgrade adds handy effects like golden birds marking hidden areas or automatically gathering flowers when you pass by them.
While you are at it, make sure to check out the rest of the village. Altars of Reflection, Wolf Pack side quests, and mythic tales all pop up as you progress, each revealing more about the Ainu people’s history and spiritual beliefs. The quest also weaves in real traditions like lip tattoos, wolf symbolism, and cise houses, giving you a glimpse into how deeply rooted the culture is in the region.
You will notice that the more you explore, the more people in the village start opening up. Talking to every Ainu NPC can unlock extra dialogue and even small hidden quests. It’s worth taking your time here instead of rushing through.
The Ainu Kotan Quest Rewards

Once you wrap up The Heart of an Ainu and upgrade the Robes fully, you will have the complete Robes for Sitturaynu armor set. Apart from looking distinct with its Ainu-inspired design, it’s pretty useful for exploration. The armor gives you subtle guidance toward collectibles and makes your exploration smoother through passive perks.
The merchants in Husko Kotan will also start offering Ainu-themed accessories, like masks, hats, and dyes, once you make enough progress. They’re not just for looks; each piece comes with a bit of lore explaining its cultural background.
By the time you are done with The Ainu Kotan questline, you will have gained access to a rich mix of story, collectibles, and insight into Ainu culture. You will also have the freedom to travel to Husko Kotan anytime, pick up mythic tales, and engage with quests that deepen your connection to the northern wilderness of Ezo.
