Ghost of Yotei: The Load We Bear Walkthrough

Here’s how you can complete ‘The Load We Bear’ mission in Ghost of Yotei and learn about its cultural and emotional story.

In Ghost of Yotei, you will step into ‘The Load We Bear’ mission after finishing ‘The Heart of an Ainu‘ in Chapter 1. It’s a quiet but moving side story set in the Nayoro Wilds, around the Ainu village of Husko Kotan. You can start this quest by talking to Huci’s son near the entrance of Husko Kotan. He tells you his mother went out to collect herbs in the nearby hills and hasn’t come back yet.

That’s your cue to go look for her. Head west from the village. The path gets steep and rocky pretty quickly, so expect some climbing. When you reach the top of the ridge, you will find Huci waiting. She looks fine, but you can tell something’s bothering her. Once you talk to her, the real task begins.

Huci will lead you through a tricky climb across cliffs and narrow ledges. You will need to follow her carefully since the route isn’t always clear. Look out for red and white cloths tied near climbable spots; they are easy to miss, but they show the right direction. After some careful climbing, you will find a sad scene: a mother bear’s body near a cave and a cub trapped under rocks. Pull away the stones to free the cub. Once it’s out, it will run into the cave for safety.

This is where your shamisen comes in handy. Play a tune near the cave entrance to calm the cub and lure it out. When it starts following you, guide it down the slopes carefully until you reach Huci again. Sliding down rocky paths helps speed things up, and the cub will stay close. Now that the cub’s safe, you and Huci bring it back to Husko Kotan. The view of the village from the mountainside is a moment worth slowing down for.

Once you arrive, Huci introduces the cub to the villagers. Each one welcomes it in their own way, one promises to hunt for it, another to carve its image, and share stories with it. These gestures represent the Ainu belief that all living beings have spirits that deserve kindness and respect. Before wrapping up, you will need to find Huci’s son again. He’s usually by the river fishing. Talk to him, invite him to the meal, and then follow him back to Huci’s house. The quest ends with a warm dinner scene that ties everything together.
