Ghost of Yotei has some genuinely challenging boss fights (duels). While duels were challenging in Ghost of Tsushima as well, it still doesn’t hold a candle to the sheer difficulty of some of the bosses in Yotei. That said, even among all the duels in the entire game, Takezon the Unrivaled is easily the most difficult, regardless of your chosen difficulty preset.

You meet Takezo fairly early in the game’s story. However, don’t let that early introduction fool you. Takezo is meant to be an endgame boss fight, something akin to Simon in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 or Bayle the Dread in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. And if you’re playing on Lethal, Takezo can feel near impossible to defeat.

However, there are ways to easily defeat Takezo, even on the Lethal difficulty. And no, you don’t even need to get all the upgrades and skills for Atsu to do so. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to defeat Takezo the Unrivaled on Ghost of Yote’s Lethal difficulty.

Takezo the Unrivaled is part of a lengthy optional quest in Ghost of Yotei. While the initial parts of the quest are rather easy, especially if you have Dual Katanas unlocked, the finale is anything but a cakewalk. For starters, regardless of your chosen difficulty, Takezo can on or two-shot you with most of his attacks. Yes, even on the Easy preset.

However, on Lethal, you’re bound to be one-shot on every hit, which leaves no room for error in this duel. Thankfully, Takezo is very predictable and only has a handful of attacks. The biggest issue that you will face when squaring up against Takezo is his speed. Takezo’s attacks are incredibly fast and leave very small windows for counterattacks.

Additionally, the Ronin can weave multiple unblockable attacks followed by a disarming combo. And given the speed of his attacks, you won’t get enough time to counter the disarming attack. That said, Perfect Dodge and Perfect Parry are very useful in this duel. Since Takezo rarely uses regular attacks, Perfect Parry comes in incredibly handy.

On Lethal, you cannot make a single mistake. However, if you have the Charm of Last Chance equipped, it can help increase your survivability, at least in the opening parts of the battle. You can also use the Charm of Inner Fire to quell the Frost damage in the latter parts of the duel. However, on Lethal, it isn’t all that necessary.

Here are some tips that will help you easily defeat Takezo the Unrivaled on Lethal:

  • Technically, you can use any build against Takezo. However, we highly recommend a specialized Dual Katana build alongside the Bounty Master armor set. Since you’re going to focus primarily on Perfect Parries, the Bounty Master set will work really well in this duel. Additionally, make sure to equip the Charm of Last Chance as well.
  • As for tools, you only need Kunai and Metsubishi. The Smoke Bombs can also help in this encounter. However, those are very situational and often don’t even work as intended.
  • Takezo always starts the fight with his Dual Katana combo, which you can Perfect Dodge easily. The trick here is to stay defensive most of the fight, and only attack after you have staggered Takezo with a Perfect Parry or Dodge.
  • If you’re having trouble dodging the unblockable attacks, use a Kunai to stagger Takezo out of the animation. Additionally, you can also use a Spirit attack to hyperarmor through most of Takezo’s combos.
  • In the final phase of the duel, your primary objective would be to survive. Frost also affects Takezo, making his attacks slower and easier to parry. Don’t rush the boss hastily. Instead, wait for him to attack first and follow up with a counterattack.
