What is Urchin Background?
Urchin is a background in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it represents their proficiencies, where the character comes from, and what their life was like before. NPC characters, including your companions, will recognize your Urchin origin and acknowledge your survival skills and ability to deal with life and adversity. Being an Urchin can occasionally earn enemies but most likely fans and glory. Also, this is the Shadowheart companion background.
After surviving a childhood on the streets, you know how to make the most out of very little. Using your street smarts bolsters your spirit for the journey ahead.

What are Urchin Proficiencies?
In addition to the role-playing aspect, the background defines proficiencies, giving you a slight bonus to dice rolls and success in checks. Proficiency is what your character is good at and what knowledge they possess. This background’s default proficiencies are Stealth, Sleight of Hand, Religion, Perception, and Insight. Your Urchin’s proficiency features are Sleight of Hand and Stealth.
Stealth is a Dexterity skill that will help you with the following checks (You will need to pass multiple checks while sneaking every time you enter the NPC eyesight cone):
- Sneaking
- Conceal yourself from foes
- Escape without being noticed
Sleight of Hand is a Dexterity skill that will help you with the following checks:
- Legerdemain skill
- Concealing an object
- Manual trickery
- Stealing
- Pickpocketing
- Disarming Traps
Should you choose Urchin in Baldur’s Gate 3?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, you should choose Urchin if it fits your character and you enjoy it. Backgrounds have defined proficiencies, while classes have a list of skills they can be proficient with, and you can pick only two or three. As a protector of the helpless, the game will reward you for saving, especially children and animals, but also stealing valuable items and persuading others to follow your beliefs. So make sure it’s how you want your character to act before you make a final decision.
