This guide has been created based on early access to the NA/EU Server and playtesting in Korea and will be updated throughout the Throne and Liberty launch.

Everything About Beginner Staff Build in Throne and Liberty

Everything About Builds and Classes in Throne and Liberty

The Staff weapon and build centers around the burn status effect. Burning causes damage over time but also boosts your overall damage with most of your skills. Therefore, you will try to apply burn via heavy attacks and Serial Fire Bombs, because using another skill to inflict maximum damage. The Staff weapon type also causes extensive area damage with huge explosions and is perfect for leveling and clearing content quickly.

However, the downside is weak survivability. Therefore, we suggest using this build with Wand in the off-hand for additional healing and crowd control, then switching the secondary weapon at the end game to a dagger for more critical and DPS.

Best Alternatives For Staff

A Longbow is the best alternative to a Staff weapon in Throne and Liberty. The Staff is a range damage weapon with heavy emphasis on AOE, while the Longbow is also range but more single-target focused. The Longbow also has the ability to heal itself but lacks the area damage of the Staff. If you enjoy a range playstyle but feel squishy or have lower survivability, try a Longbow or a Wand.

How to get Staff in Throne and Liberty?

How to Get Staff Weapon in Throne and Liberty

The best way to get a Staff weapon in Throne and Liberty is at the Equipment Merchant in the main hub city after the tutorial. You can use a common Staff and immediately unlock the skills by equipping it with your main hand. Additionally, you can craft the Staff at Weapon Crafter throughout various cities in Throne and Liberty.

How to Play the Staff in Throne and Liberty

Staff Weapon in Throne and Liberty MMORPG

The best way to play the Staff build in Throne and Liberty is by using Serial Fire Bombs to trigger the burn status effect and then using Inferno Wave to do 3-meter area damage. The skill Serial Fire Bombs can be used consecutively up to 3 times in a row, giving you multiple burn stacks, which can be consumed via Inferno Wave for extra damage. Therefore, expect to hang back at range and channel Serial Fire Bombs repeatedly for maximum damage.

The second skill combo is Ice Spear and Chain Lighting. Ice Spear hurls ice damage, weakening and applying the frost status effect. Chain Lighting deals damage to additional enemies within a 5-meter radius if the target is wet or frosted. Moreover, this skill, Chain Lighting, benefits from the burning status effect as well.

Best Weapon Combination Staff

The best weapon combination for a beginner using the Staff is to combine it with the Wand and Tome in the off-hand. The Wand and Tome give you curses, area damage, stun, and healing. The healing can be applied to you or members of your party. This is especially helpful when leveling and completing dungeons as an off-healer. Moreover, healing is helpful when under pressure and having limited skills to survive.

Alternatives Weapon Combination

The Staff and Dagger combination is the best for pure damage when survivability isn’t a concern. The benefits of the Dagger are critical bonuses, passives, stealth, and mobility. Staff + Dagger allows you to sacrifice survivability for even more incredible damage but can be unfriendly to beginners unfamiliar with Throe and Liberty.

Best Stat Points

Best Beginner Staff Stat Points Throne and Liberty

The best stats to focus on using a beginner Staff build in Throne and Liberty are Dexterity and Wisdom. Dexterity affects critical attack, evasion, and maximum damage, while Wisdom helps with mana, skill cooldown, and damage. The Staff is dependent on skills with long cooldowns to optimize damage and lower survivability where evading an attack is critical. Therefore, we recommend spending 30 points on Dexterity, 30 on Wisdom, and 19 on Perception. This will give you the best blend of durability, resource sustain, and damage.

Below is the best recommended Stat Point for a beginner Staff Build in Throne and Liberty:

  1. 30 Dexterity: affects critical attack, evasion, and maximum damage.
  2. 30 Wisdom: affects maximum mana and mana regeneration, skill cooldown, and maximum damage.
  3. 19 Perception: effect accuracy of attacks, Crowd Control effects, enhancing time boost ability, maximum damage, and minimum damage.
  4. 10 Strength: affects defense, maximum health, maximum damage, and minimum damage.

In Throne and Liberty, stat points are earned while leveling and increasing your effectiveness.  When you spend a stat point, you increase the effectiveness of that related attribute. However, after a certain number of points, you reach diminishing returns, and two points are required to increase a stat rather than one. Moreover, once stats reach a certain level spent (30 or greater), you gain unique bonuses. Below are what stats influence which attribute of your class and build:

Active Skills

You can place up to 12 skills on your active skill bar from both weapons. Active skills are on a one-second global cooldown and can be used alongside light and heavy attacks. Below is a list of the active skills for the beginner staff build in Throne and Liberty:

  1. Serial Fire Bombs: Ranged area of effect attack that can apply Weaken: Burning.
  2. Inferno Wave: Another Ranged attack that can apply Weaken: Burning to the target.
  3. Frost Smokescreen: Mobility skill that creates a 4 meter zone that applies Weaken and Frost to targets in range and moves you 8 meters away.
  4. Chain Lightning: A high damage skill that will chain to another target if the initial target is affected by Wet or Frost.
  5. Inner Peace: Increases Mana Regen for 6 seconds. The effect falls off if you move.
  6. Fireball Barrage: A multi-hit damage over time attack that hits 10 times.
  7. Ice Spear: A high-damage ranged attack that can Weaken the target and applies Frost.
  8. Icebound Tomb: A decent damage ability that has a chance to apply Petrification: Freeze to the target. Applies Frost.
  9. High Focus: Improves Cooldown Speed and Move Speed for 12 seconds.
  10. Judgment Lightning: Deals a massive amount of damage, dealing bonus damage to Wet or Frosted enemies.
  11. Salvation Chain: A special growth skill that will pull party members in range toward you.
  12. Infernal Meteor: A special growth skill that deals a large amount of damage in 4 meter area.

Passive Skills

Passive skills give bonuses passively and are important for off-hand and main hand weapon choices. Below is a list of the passive skills for the beginner staff build in Throne and Liberty:

  1. Manaball Eruption: When attacking with a Staff or Wand, has a chance to shoot additional magic orb.
  2. Asceticism: Mana regen increases. Standing still increases this effect also increasing Magic, Melee, and Ranged Hit.
  3. Mana Amp: Increases Max Health and Max Mana.
  4. Flame Condensation: Increases Burning Damage.
  5. Echoic Barrier: Decreases the duration of the Silence effect, and increases resistance to Silence, Bind, and Sleep after effected by one of those effects.
  6. Frost Maker: Increases the effectiveness of Move Speed Reduction effects.
  7. Forbidden Sanctuary: Decreases all Mana Cost Efficiency and Increases Skill Damage Boost.

Passive skills are only activated when equipped in the passive quick slot in the skills menu. These are designed to enhance your build with more damage, healing, resource sustain, and survivability. Like active skills, your weapon must be equipped on your main or off-hand for the passives to apply. You will increase your passive skills through the leveling process and be able to equip up to eight from the two weapons you have equipped.

Defense Skills

Landing a Perfect Fury Attack Example in Throne and Liberty MMORPG

The Staff’s defensive skill is Mystic Shield. Defends against attacks. On defending against a Fury Attack while stationary, deals 175% of Base Damage + 98 to the target with a 80% chance of using an Ice skill with a Weakening effect that decreases Move Speed by 40% for 3s. On defending against a Fury Attack within 0.5s, Mystic Shield changes to Lightning Pick for 3s. Wrath Attacks can’t be defended. Use with the directional buttons to defend against attacks while moving 4m in the designated direction for 0.5s. On defending against a Fury or Wrath Attack, Mystic Shield changes to Scorching Sphere for 3s.

Lightning Pick: A Lightning skill that deals 320% of Base Damage + 125. Deals 4% increased damage per stack against a target that you applied Burning. Damage transfers to other enemies within a 5m radius from the target up to 3 times if the target is Wet, or Frosted (by you). Damage decreases by 20% every time it transfers, and it will not transfer to a target already affected.

Level Progression

Level 1 Skills and Passives

Level 1 Skill Progression Staff Beginner Build Throne and Liberty

At level one, you gain four skills from each weapon type equipped. Make sure to buy a common Wand and Tome from the vendor in the main hub town after the tutorial.

Serial Fire Bombs is your main spammable skill that you can use repeatedly to trigger the burn status effect. This skill acts as your primer before using Inferno Wave to trigger extra damage. Ideally, you will spam Serial Fire Bombs repeatedly, if uninterrupted, once it’s fully upgraded. Frost Smokescreen is a way to apply frost debuff and move backward to avoid incoming melee damage. Chain Lightning is your main nuke skill, which benefits from Burning, Wet, or Frosted. When Frosted, you can do AOE damage in a 5-meter radius. Therefore, either use Serial Fire Bombs and Chain Lighting or Frost Smokescreen and Chain Lightning.

For Wand skills, Touch of Despair and Corrupted Magic Circle apply the weaken “curse” status effect, then Curse Explosion consumes and blows it up. This is similar to burn and Inferno Wave. Your heal is Swift Healing and is a priority to level up so it can be used consecutively.

Below is a list of the recommended active and passive skills for the staff build at level 1:

Level 15 Skills and Passives

Level 15 Skill Progression Staff Beginner Build Throne and Liberty

At level 15, you should have 12 skills on your bar, with two more from Staff and Wand. The Staff gains Inner Peace and Fireball Barrage. Inner Peace is a critical skill because it increases mana recovery but requires you to be stationary. Moreover, you gain a benefit if you’re wet. Ideally, you want to use this when targets are crowd-controlled with snares, bind, or sleep so you can maximize the mana recovery. Fireball Barrage is the other staff skill but is hard to use and will likely come off your bar quickly as you progress.

The Wand and Tome gains Cursed Nightmare and Clay’s Salvation. Cursed Nightmare is a crowd control skill that puts an enemy to sleep. This should be used before a pull to put a ranged high-damage dealer asleep while you deal with the melee targets. Clay’s Salvation is a powerful AOE healing to you and your party. Only use this as a last resort when Swift Healing isn’t down or you’re doing group PvE, and someone is about to die. The mana cost is very high and will tank your resources otherwise.

Below is a list of the recommended active and passive skills for the staff build at level 15:

Level 25 Skills and Passives

Level 25 Skill Progression Staff Beginner Build Throne and Liberty

At level 25, you can now swap in and out skills depending on your playstyle. Drop Fireball Barrage for Ice Spear and Cursed Nightmare for Icebound Tomb. Icebound Tomb also stuns a target but additionally applies Frost and can decrease move speed. Therefore, it’s a redundant crowd control skill, though having two can be helpful in some fights.

Ice Spear is a much better skill than Fireball Barrage because Ice Spear applies Frost and slows movement speed. You can use this to prime targets because of chain lighting, but it also slows them down so you can strafe and keep your distance. Remember, the Staff wants to apply Burn and Frost as much as possible because your two main nukes benefit from it: Inferno Wave and Chain Lightining.

Below is a list of the recommended active and passive skills for the staff build at level 25:

Level 25 Active and Passives Skills for Best Throne and Liberty: Staff Beginner Build

Level 36 Skills and Passives

Level 36 Skill Progression Staff Beginner Build Throne and Liberty

At level 36, you should have enough area damage from the staff so you can drop Corrupted Magic Circle for High Focus. High Focus reduces cooldown speed and increases move speed for you and party members. This is a huge boost to everyone’s damage and is even helpful in solo play. However, the skill has a long cooldown, so use it properly. Ideally, you can apply this as the start of combat after pre-buffing because you want maximum use from the cooldown reduction. Or if your timing is weak, use it after one cycle of your rotation to refresh the skills quicker.

Practice pre-buffing and using a damage remedy, High Focus, Serial Fire Bombs multiple times into Inferno Wave. Next, Ice Spear and Chain Lightning, Touch of Despair, and Curse Explosion are used as AOE damage fillers. Swap out Icebound Tomb for another damage skill if you need an extra damage skill.

Below is a list of the recommended active and passive skills for the staff build at level 36:

Level 50 Skills and Passives

Level 50 Skill Progression Staff Beginner Build Throne and Liberty

At level 50, you can slot all your skills and passives. You can drop Icebound Tomb for Infernal Meteor if you need extra AOE damage and stacks of burning. This will give you much more damage at the expense of a missing crowd control skill. Touch of Despair and Curse Explosion can also be dropped for whatever you are lacking. For more damage skills, crowd control, or healing, look to drop them, as your Staff skills and damage should be sufficient for everything.

Throne and Liberty - Quality Training Book Longbow Green

Skills come in different rarities and can be upgraded through growth stones. Upgrading skills increases their effectiveness and unlocks new perks and benefits like extra damage, more targets hit, etc. As you progress the skill from uncommon to rare to epic, the material required and cost increase. Therefore, players must select the most used and powerful skills to level first. This leveling skills system is RNG, and spending countless materials on a weak skill can be frustrating.

Below are how skills upgrade and progress in Throne and Liberty:

The most critical skills to upgrade for a beginner staff build are Serial Fire Bombs and Inferno Wave, as this is your one-two combo with the burn status effect. The most important skill specialization for the Staff is Serial Fire Bombs Able to Move, Focused Fire Bombs, and Range. Serial Fire Bombs is your most important skill, and optimizing the ability to move, increase range, and damage is best to focus on. Below are our recommended skill specialization selections for a beginner Staff build in Throne and Liberty:

  2. Inferno Wave Consecutive Use (5) – Can use up to 2 times with a 50% chance.

Weapon Mastery

Staff Weapon Mastery Throne and Liberty
Wand Weapon Mastery - Throne and Liberty

The Destroy Weapon Mastery is the best for the Staff build to focus on because of the damage perks. Next, focus on attributes in the Staff Weapon Mastery. For Wand users, max out Recovery, then damage.

Weapon Mastery is a system that gives you experience for your weapon that is equipped proportional to the experience earned.  Thus, at the start of the game, Weapon Mastery points are limited, but you will start earning more as your experience per kill and quest increase with level and zones.  Your main hand weapon gains increased weapon mastery, while off-hand still gains some, just not as much.

Best Guardian

Throne and Liberty Guardian Lady Knight Kamarshea

The best Guardian for the beginner staff build is Lady Knight Kamarshea because of the Eternal Barrier skill that creates a shield based on your max mana and reduces cooldowns. This Guardian acts as a defensive and offensive tool that can be used every 10 minutes. If you have enough survivability, look to Masked Warlock Dantalux and the skill Abyssal Sanctuary for increased burst damage.

Guardians act as a short-term ultimate or super ability with powerful effects and a long cooldown.  Ideally, you want to select a Guardian that either enhances a strength or covers up a weakness.  You obtain Guardians after level 25 and completing Chapter 25. From that point, you can find how to obtain additional Guardians to enhance your Wand Build further. Moreover, these skills can only be used infrequently, as in 10 minutes, so save them for critical situations.

Best Beginner Weapons, Armor, and Accessories

Equipment such as weapons, armor, and accessories can be found throughout Throne and Liberty questing or combat.  However, crafting specific equipment that grants bonuses to your build will be the most effective way to increase your power.  There are no light, medium, or heavy proficiency requirements, but specific equipment grants unique bonuses suited to a longbow or tome user, not a Greatsword wielder.

Therefore, it’s important that you craft the correct equipment early in Throne and Liberty.  Then, you can upgrade to higher quality throughout your playthrough and end at the max level of 50 with a properly balanced set of gear specifically designed for your beginner staff build.

In Throne and Liberty, consumables play an important part in your build’s overall power. One-time use items like Stellarite and World Tree Leaf add damage or healing to the player. These items should always be stocked up and used throughout leveling and boss fights. Moreover, food and Remedy make a difference in challenging encounters.

The following list represents the best individual use consumable items that will aid in the beginner staff build in Throne and Liberty:

  • Stellarite – adds 10% of weapon damage consumed on every attack.  Stock up at Sundries Merchant before adventuring, as the passive boost in damage is significant.

  • Recovery Crystal – instantly restoring 750 of your health with a one-minute cooldown.  These come in a variety of forms, with more powerful versions.  You should combine this healing with any skill-based healing and be aware of the long one-minute cooldown.
