Learn whether Dragon Age: The Veilguard is open-world like Inquisition or if it’s a linear title like the first two titles in the series.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard shares many similarities with its immediate predecessor, Dragon Age: Inquisition. From continuing the story of the Trespasser DLC to carrying over some of the gameplay elements, The Veilguard is pretty much a direct sequel to Inquisition, albeit with a new protagonist. However, there are also some fundamental differences between the two titles that set them apart from one another.
The biggest difference is, unlike Inquisition, Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t an open-world RPG. Instead, the game is quite linear, akin to the series’ past, i.e., Dragon Age: Origins and its sequel. That’s not to say, there are no open-ended exploration segments in The Veilguard.
In fact, The Veilguard’s Thedas is designed in a semi-open-world structure. The exploration in The Veilguard is quite similar to that of the modern God of War or Tomb Raider titles. Although the game is fairly linear in structure and progression, there are plenty of opportunities to explore Thedas. Here’s everything you need to know about Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s map, exploration, and more.
How Does Exploration Work in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard follows a semi-open-world structure. That means, instead of having the entire map open to the players right from the get-go, parts of it are slowly and steadily revealed as they progress through the main story. Think of it like how the different realms were unlocked in God of War (2018). Furthermore, as you’re going through the main story, you can choose to backtrack to past locations either to complete side quests or find loot that you might’ve missed previously. Also, certain regions have special vendors, somewhat like in Dragon’s Dogma 2. As such, backtracking is more or less necessary to upgrade and grab certain rare resources.
It should be noted that there are parts in Dragon Age: The Veikguard’s story that act as “points of no return.” Triggering these sections and progressing past them will result in irreversible changes to Thedas.
As such, before you reach those sections, make sure you’re not missing anything in the previously explored parts of the map. Additionally, upon completing the final main story quest, you won’t be able to return to Thedas in the same playthrough. You’ll have to go through New Game+ or an entirely new playthrough to do so. Thankfully, Dragon Age: The Veilguard does feature manual saves (on top of autosave), and you can revert to previous save states any time you want before heading to New Game+.
