Everything you need to know about Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s freezing and crashing error on PC, possible fixes, reasons, and more.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is finally out in the wild, with what can be considered a pretty well-optimized PC port. The last few single-player PC titles from publisher EA have been a hit or miss when it comes to port quality, i.e., Dead Space (remake) and Star Wars Jedi Survivor. However, The Veilguard seems to be an exception to this rule, for the most part. Although BioWare’s latest title isn’t necessarily unoptimized, it does have its fair share of technical issues, as reported by players online. The most prominent issues that many players are facing with the PC port are freezes and, in some instances, crashes. Naturally, for an immersive RPG, crashes and stuttering can be a deal-breaker.
Although Dragon Age: The Veilguard does employ shader pre-caching, it isn’t completely immune to freezes. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to easily fix the freezing and crashing error in The Veilguard’s PC version. Here are some tips and tricks on how you can potentially fix Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s freezing and crashing errors on PC.
Possible Fixes for Freezing and Crashing Error in Dragon Age: The Veilguard PC
There are a few primary reasons for the freezing and crashing error in Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s PC version. As a Frostbite game, The Veilguard is quite heavy on VRAM. While the game’s minimum requirements do feature 4 GB VRAM GPUs, it rarely, if at all stays within those bounds. Instead, at 1080p, the game uses 7 GB of VRAM, on average. Furthermore, if you plan to use some of the RT features The Veilguard has to offer, you’ll find the game occasionally going past 8 GB of VRAM usage. Naturally, if you’re trying to run the game on a lower-end GPU with limited VRAM, you might find it occasionally freezing and even crashing the desktop.
Another major reason for the game’s stuttering and crashing errors is outdated drivers, especially if you’re on a lower-end system. Both Nvidia and AMD have released their GPU driver updates for The Veilguard, and installing those updates is paramount for enjoying the game on PC. Updating the drivers also helps alleviate some of the performance-related issues that might show up on 8 GB VRAM GPUs at higher resolutions. That said, here are some of the ways you can fix the crashing errors in the PC version of Dragon Age: The Veilguard:
1. Update Your GPU Drivers
Updating the GPU as well as other firmware drivers is the easiest way to fix most performance and stability-related issues in a PC game. You can find most firmware drivers under Windows Update (save for BIOS, which needs to be manually updated). For GPU driver updates, you can use Nvidia’s GeForce Experience or AMD’s Adrenaline applications, depending on your GPU manufacturer. Both GeForce Experience and Adrenaline make updating the GPU drivers a seamless and mostly automated process. You can also download GPU driver updates manually from Nvidia or AMD’s official websites. Also, it’s best to keep Windows updated as well.
2. Verify Game Files on Steam
One of the easiest fixes for any PC game on Steam is to verify the game files. Given most AAA games nowadays come with 100+ GB file sizes, it’s not uncommon for some files to get corrupted or misplaced during download or installation. Such corrupted files can often end up causing a cascade of issues in games, ranging from graphical bugs to crashes. This is where the game file (cache) verification tool comes into play. The verification tool essentially scans through the game’s installation directory and replaces any files that might have been corrupted during download or installation. Here are the steps to use the file verification tool on Steam:
- Launch Steam > Click on Library.
- Right-click on Dragon Age: The Veilguard from the list of games in your Steam library.
- Click on Properties > Local Files.
- Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for the files to get checked.
- Once done, launch the game.
3. Check the System Requirements for the Game
Lastly, it goes without saying that you should always check a game’s system requirements before spending your hard-earned money on it. Given the state of modern PC ports, it always pays to be careful before sinking upwards of $70 on a PC title. While Dragon Age: The Veilguard is quite generous and also scalable when it comes to its PC port, you should only buy it if your PC at least meets the minimum requirements for the game. Given how “VRAM hungry” the game can be at higher resolutions, it’s better to have a PC that meets (or surpasses) the recommended requirements for The Veilguard. That way, you can ensure a smooth gameplay experience with minimal issues.
