Best Strategies for Calivan Boss Fight in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Stay cautious during the second phase of Calivan (Source: Electronic Arts)

Let’s break down each phase by looking at the attack patterns and the ways to counter them:

Phase 1

The mage boss Calivan appears in its original form and performs some basic attacks in the starting phase of the battle. During this phase, he is smaller in size compared to phase 2.

  • He performs several AoE attacks. He deals a circular area of damage around him with crystals. Another AoE attack you need to watch out for is his T-shaped attack.
  • During the fight, he often raises his staff in the air and launches a pair of orbs toward you. This can sometimes take place three times in a row.
  • Calivan also summons several mage clones equipped with shields in this phase.

Strategies:

  • Always try to keep your distance from Calivan at this phase, as being too close to the mage boss allows him to deal an area damage with spikes.
  • Try to avoid his AoE attacks by carefully measuring your steps.
  • When Calivan is launching the pair of orbs, wait for the orb to approach you and then dodge the attack. Double-tap dodge comes with a risk of making you vulnerable to the next orbs. So try to hit single-tap dodge to counter this attack effectively.
  • Take out the clones as soon as possible. They can be easily wiped with your ranged and AoE attacks.

Phase 2

Here, the difficulty rises a notch. Calivan will surprise you with the ultimate form, Calivan’s Pride. The Calivan’s Pride is a beast with a lot of durability and powerful attacks.

  • When Calivan’s Pride begins to swing the sword, he unleashes a powerful shockwave toward you.
  • Another thing you need to worry about is Calivan’s Pride’s lightning ball technique, where the boss summons lightning balls into the air. It deals a circular AoE damage.

Strategies:

  • Get close to Calivan’s Pride and perform several strong hits to reduce the health bar. You can also take advantage of the monster’s attack by parrying it at the right moment. Then use the gap to deal some massive blows.
  • Don’t stay on the linear pathway when he unleashes the shockwave by raising his staff. You can easily evade it by dodging to the right or left.
  • Prioritize dodging the lightning ball attack and strike back whenever possible.

One useful tip is that Calivan’s Pride is weak against Necrosis attacks, which means Lucanis plays a vital role in this phase. Use Lucanis’s necrotic attacks and abilities to deplete the health bar at a fast rate.

Phase 3

Once it’s done, you can bring back Calivan to the form from phase 1. Since it’s almost similar to phase 1, all you have to do is strike and deal damage. Remember the strategies mentioned in phase 1 and apply them in phase 3. Within no time, the battle will end, and Calivan will be defeated.
