Varric returns in Dragon Age: The Veilguard as a fan-favorite character. But does he get to live to celebrate the game’s ending?
Varric returns to Thedas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, but fans are worried about whether he will survive the end. The answer is complex, especially due to his close ties with Rook.
NOTE: Major spoiler ahead.
Unfortunately, we have to be the bearer of bad news. Varric does not survive one of the major events in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The game mostly follows Rook’s perspective, and he turns out to be an unreliable narrator when it comes to his friend’s death.
How Does Varric Die in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
Every fan would want their Dwarven friend to survive till the end game, but fans will have to prepare for heartbreak. Varric dies in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. However, the plot around his death is a little more complex than just a heroic death scene. This character helped Thedas in the past two installments in the series, and BioWare probably didn’t want his death to be swift or meaningless.
How the Story Plays Out
In the prologue mission, you and your companions fight against Solas and try to keep him from tearing down the Veil. The Dread Wolf himself created the Veil long ago to separate realities and now wishes to remove it for his own race. After a basic tutorial mission, Varric reaches Solas first, hoping to stop him without much force.
A cutscene plays out, and by the end, we can see Varric grappling his Elven friend from behind. He is not squeezing him in a hug but trying to steal a dagger from him, which he was using to tear the Veil. In a fit of rage, Solas turns around to stab Varric in his torso with the same blade. Rook sees it and rushes to the scene only to be pushed away with immense force by the antagonist. Your player gets concussed and later wakes up in The Lighthouse. You have a long chat with Varric there, discussing how you thought he was dead.
However, Varric is not real from here on. Towards the end of the game, it is revealed that you were the only one seeing Varric, and he was a figment of your imagination. Your real dwarf friend died in the first battle itself. However, the head trauma and the mental toll of his demise led Rook to hallucinate him.
He wasn’t a “ghost” either. During their last conversation, in the place where Varric dies, the latter reveals that Rook was filling in the blanks all along. Rook has a final imaginary conversation with him in his head which is no short of emotional and finally lets go of his friend.
