Can You Romance Solas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veilguard does not let you romance Solas as the elven mage serves as one of the game’s main antagonists.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is Bioware’s latest attempt at creating a medieval high-fantasy role-playing experience. The game is filled with in-depth social elements, with your relationships with other characters blooming or failing consequent to the choices you make. The game also allows you to foster relationships further beyond mere companionship and romance with the characters. Solas, a returning character from Dragon Age: Inquisition, is a focal point in The Veilguard and was a character you could romance in Inquisition. This has led many fans to wonder: Can you romance Solas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard? The answer is no, but only for your character Rook. Solas can, however, romance with the Inquisitor. It’s a bit complicated, but let us explain.

Why Can’t You Romance Solas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard? 

While you could romance Solas in Dragon Age: Inquisition, he is not available for the same in The Veilguard, and this is so for a variety of reasons. The first reason is that Solas is not a companion character in the game. The elven mage was one of the many companion characters available in Dragon Age: Inquisition. You could do his companion quests to gain his approval and proceed ahead with romance. Since he is no longer a companion in The Veilguard, you cannot romance him. 

The second reason has more to do with the story of The Veilguard. While Solas was a companion during most of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the post-credits scene of the 2014 game revealed that Solas had joined the party with sinister intentions and was scheming something beyond the scope of our imagination. Following the reveal, Solas serves as one of the primary antagonists in The Veilguard and therefore isn’t a romance option. Narratively, it would make zero sense for Rook to pursue Solas romantically.

Solas-Inquisitor Romance 

While Rook cannot romance Solas, the Inquisitor can. The Inquisitor is the protagonist of Dragon Age: Inquisition and held close ties with the elven mage in the game. The Inquisitor can share a romantic moment with Solas if you follow certain steps.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard kicks off the game by letting you choose how the events of the previous game turned out, which in turn impacts the story in The Veilguard. The game also lets you select the appearance of your Inquisitor. We recommend selecting the following options: 

• Inquisitor: Female Elf.
• Friendship and romance: Romanced Solas.
• The Hidden God: Vowed to save Solas from himself.

With these options selected, proceed with your playthrough of the Veilguard. Later in the story, you will have the chance to save and redeem Solas. If the Inquisitor has admitted her feelings for Solas and you choose to save him, the two will share a kiss. 

Which Characters Can You Romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard allows you to romance seven companion characters in the game: 

• Bellara
• Davrin
• Emmrich
• Harding
• Lucanis
• Neve
• Taash

To romance these characters, you have to raise their approval level and complete their companion quests along the way. After each quest, you have to meet these characters in the Lighthouse hub area and talk to them for new dialogue options. You have to select certain dialogue choices to boost your approval and progress ahead in the romance. As you raise the approval higher and higher, you will be given a chance to commit to a character, which will then ascend your romance to the next level and lock you out from pursuing other characters romantically.
