Boruto, the sequel to the legendary Naruto anime, has had a tumultuous journey ever since its debut. It successfully carried on the legacy of its predecessor but has had mixed fan reactions. Right when the anime seemed to be reaching the highest of its stakes in the main cast’s battle against Code, it came to an end. This left fans highly expectant of its return, especially considering the positive reception of its source material. So, when will the Boruto anime return?

Currently, there has been no confirmation regarding the Boruto anime’s return, but fans have made their own assumptions based on the studio’s schedule. Here is a closer look at this.

Why Did the Boruto Anime End?

The Boruto anime ended on March 26, 2023, with its 293rd episode. The series concluded with Boruto healing from his supposed death as well as a flashforward sequence of the confrontation between Kawaki and Boruto.

The main reason why this Studio Pierrot project ended its long-running tenure of six years was because it was very close to catching up to the manga. The final arc of the anime series was the Code’s Assault Arc, following which only the Omnipotence Arc remained from the source material.

The manga had also gone on a short hiatus to prepare for the timeskip and Two Blue Vortex. The events of the Omnipotence Arc are crucial to explaining Two Blue Vortex, and fans would have felt a disconnect if the anime ended with that arc.

Hence, rather than finishing on a world-altering event and waiting for Two Blue Vortex to release more chapters, the anime decided to conclude prior to that. Boruto has also notably faced several quality and production issues over the course of its release.

Taking this break would ensure the team could recalibrate and return to animate the highly rated Boruto sequel.

When Will the Boruto Anime Return?

As mentioned earlier, there is no mention of a specific return date for Boruto Part 2 at this moment. However, as soon as the first part concluded, it was confirmed that the sequel was under production.

Considering the lack of information since then, it is safe to say that the studio is taking their job very seriously for the series’ return. It is also worth mentioning that Studio Pierrot is currently working on Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, ending in 2025.

Since Boruto and Bleach share the same demographic, it is safe to say that the studio wishes to avoid any clashes between them. Hence, many fans surmise that Boruto will be returning soon after Bleach concludes. This could be any time around 2026, by which time there would be more source material to adapt.

What Will Happen in Part 2 of the Boruto Anime?

Part 2 of the Boruto anime will kick off with the Omnipotence Arc before heading into the events of Two Blue Vortex. This will feature one of the most significant moments in the entire Naruto universe, where Eida uses her ability to rewrite history.

Her manipulation will overwrite the memories of most characters, where Kawaki will be considered Naruto’s son and Boruto will be seen as the Hokage’s murderer. With Naruto, Hinata, and Sasuke out of action, the new cast will finally be allowed to stand on their own.

Soon after this, the series will feature a four-year timeskip, at which point Boruto stays on the run and gains immense power. He returns to the village to protect it against Code and other antagonists connected to the God Trees.

Hence, Boruto Part 2 will delve deeper into the complex relationship between Boruto and Kawaki. It will introduce an element of mystery through the rewritten timeline as well as new threatening villains.

Side characters such as Himawari, Sarada, and Mitsuki will also take the spotlight more, stepping out of the original cast’s shadows.

The Controversy Regarding the Boruto Anime

While the main reason the Boruto anime ended was due to catching up to the source, there is another likely cause. This is because the anime received a lot of bad press and hate. In contrast to hype moments such as Baryon Mode Naruto, there were an equal amount of unnecessary filler episodes and bad animation.

For context, the Boruto manga has only 81 chapters, while the anime stretched it out to over 290 episodes. More than canon content, there were a lot of anime-original scenes that merely mimicked Naruto.

This caused the Boruto anime to receive a rating of only 6 out of 10 on MyAnimeList. Fans of the manga were extremely disheartened by this. However, other viewers recognized the potential of the storyline. If given a faithful adaptation, it could likely regain its popularity.

Expectations for the Boruto Anime’s Return

Based on the controversy, its sudden end, and the success of Two Blue Vortex, there is one major expectation for Boruto Part 2: a shift to a seasonal format rather than a continuous release schedule.

This change would eliminate the need for filler content and allow Studio Pierrot to focus all its resources on delivering superior animation for the canon storyline. It would also relieve the pressure of churning out material solely to retain viewership.

Fans got this expectation after seeing the return of Bleach, which split up the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc into separate cours. Made by the same Studio Pierrot, they were unable to believe how high the quality was, even improving upon the manga.

Given the long wait for Boruto’s return and the widespread praise for Two Blue Vortex, there is a very realistic possibility that the same approach will be taken.

Conclusion

Despite not having a current release date, the return of the Boruto anime is inevitable. Rather than simply resuming, fans also have a set of reasonable expectations for the sequel in order to do justice to the source. Having experienced how good Studio Pierrot is at their best, the common sentiment hopes for Boruto Part 2 to receive the same level of quality.
