Ash’s Pikachu and Captain Pikachu are two of the most iconic Pokemon in the series, but which one is better?
In the near three decades since Pokemon first graced our silver screens, we’ve seen dozens of Pokemon join and cross Ash on his journey to be the very best, but few are as iconic as Pikachu. The little yellow lightning Pokemon has stuck by Ash through thick and thin and is a crucial part of his journey.
With Pikachu being such a reflection of Ash’s willpower and growth and the face of the series itself, it came as no surprise when the series decided to bring in another from Pokemon Horizons. Yes, we’re talking about the hat-wielding Captain Pikachu. One of Professor Friede’s most trusted partners, Captain Pikachu is the Pikachu you know but with a shot of some extra confidence.
The two Pikachus are iconic in their own way, bringing their own distinct traits and personalities to the table. Personalities aside, the two Pokemon also bring in their own battle traits and strategies that make them different. If the two Pokemon were to ever go head-to-head, the battle would be one for the ages. But the question would be who would win in this clash of titans? If you ask us, we think it would be Ash’s Pikachu.

Through the three decades where we’ve followed Ash and his Pikachu, one thing that has constantly been established is that Ash’s Pikachu is the perfect underdog. He may not be the best fighter in Ash’s roster, but he’s the most tenacious (remember Leon’s Charizard?). This tenacity is then paired up with creativity. We frequently see Ash’s Pikachu dish out moves like Iron Tail, Thunderbolt, and Electroweb to catch his opponents by surprise.
While Ash’s Pikachu is the perfect underdog, the Cap is a natural-born leader who fills in for Friede and isn’t afraid to lead. He fights much like a seasoned fighter, always in control with a game plan in mind. The extra confidence makes Captain Pikachu an absolute killer in battle.
Pit the two against each other, and we’ll have to give the edge to Ash’s Pikachu. He has faced opponents several times stronger and has pushed on to win through sheer will time and time again. Up against the Captain, we know he will hold strong and win.
