The Hideout system in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a step up from Valhalla’s Settlements. In this article, we will talk about it in detail.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows features two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke. Naoe is a shinobi, and Yasuke is a samurai. Both are members of two very popular factions from Feudal Japan, which is the setting of AC Shadows. Both the shinobi and the samurai have reportedly played a huge role in Japanese history, directly and indirectly.
And when you are part of something so influential, you naturally make a lot of enemies. The developers at Ubisoft thought about this aspect and decided that to liberate Japan, both protagonists need an undercover base of operations. This is the new hideout system in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and in this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about it.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Hideout System Explained

Ubisoft first introduced a base system in Assassin’s Creed II. We have seen some variations of such a system in AC: Brotherhood, AC III, and AC IV: Black Flag as well. However, since the release of Assassin’s Creed Rogue, the franchise did not see a base system until AC Valhalla reintroduced it with its settlements.
The Hideout in Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes Valhalla’s settlement system and expands on it enough to create something entirely new. Shadows’ Hideout is a social hub and a complex of houses that you can customize in any way you see fit. To be more specific, think of it as an empty plot of land where you can place any building you want in any way you want—almost like a city builder. However, the hideout system is understandably smaller in scale compared to city builders.
The Hideout System Will Feature Different Buildings With Different Purposes

When you start building your hideout, you will have the option to choose from 12 different buildings. Each building serves a unique purpose and contributes to your progress throughout the game. Some of them will be more important than others, such as the Dojo, Study, and The Forge.
Additionally, you can either place these buildings separately or snap them into each other to create a structure out of two connected buildings. All of these buildings are also fully customizable, and players will be able to change the materials of the walls and the roof to their liking.
Other than the buildings, you can also, of course, make pathways and decorate them with lanterns and flora. In addition to all of this, your hideout will also have many people in it. You can recruit them throughout the game, and once you do, they will move to your hideout to make it livelier.
The NPCs in the Hideout Are an Improvement From Valhalla

Some of these residents will be interactable, and they will have their own side quests for you. We do not yet have a confirmed number of how many side quests and optional objectives will be available in the Hideout, but we can say that the Kuji-Kiri side objective has already been confirmed to be a part of it. Additionally, what if we say that humans won’t be the only residents of your complex?
Yes, in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you will be able to place various animals in your hideout as well, including Deer, Cats, Fawns, Bunnies, Hares, Red Foxes and their cubs, Macaques, Tanuki and their cubs. Of course, you can also pet them. However, the animals of your hideout will reportedly be tied to Sumi-e, an optional objective.
Moreover, many reports have suggested that different aspects of the hideout system will be affected by the changing seasons, so make sure that you visit it as often as possible.
The Hideout Will Be Unlocked Naturally
Lastly, the Hideout is a crucial part of Shadows. So, it is not missable at all, and players will be able to unlock it naturally during their playthrough. To be more specific, it is unlocked when Naoe meets Tomiko, and she introduces the protagonist to her house and to The League, which takes place quite early in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
