All Assassin’s Creed Protagonists and Their Titles

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has seen plenty of protagonists with different titles denoting their ranks. Here are all of them.

Every protagonist in the Assassin’s Creed series has a different journey and motivation to reach the end of their story. Usually, all characters become “Master Assassins” after their game has ended, but sometimes the story continues even after the main questline through books and other media. So, we will see where each AC hero reached by the end of their respective games and what title they held post-endgame.

Titles Each Assassin Held in Assassin’s Creed

Since not all protagonists are on the same level by the end of their respective games, we will try making generic titles to group them and easily sort them together. Note that apart from “Apprentice,” “Novice,” “Disciple,” “Assassin,” and “Master Assassin,” all other titles are made up for better understanding. Since AC Shadows is yet to be released, we are not including Yasuke and Naoe on the list. The title classification is as follows:

  • Proto-Assassin: Kassandra
  • Mentor: Ezio, Connor, Bayek, Aya
  • Master: Altair, Adewale, Arno, Basim, Jacob Frye, Evie Frye
  • Assassin: Aveline
  • Outcast: Edward, Shay, Eivor

We have not included the Assassin’s Creed Chronicles protagonists on this list. Those characters are recognized as canon, but their stories were so short that it wouldn’t do them justice to rank them among protagonists who had more time to develop their characters. If you need further explanation for each classification, keep scrolling below.

  • Kassandra

The “Proto-Assassins” were the individuals who came before the Assassin Brotherhood even started. Since Kassandra is the canon protagonist in AC Odyssey, she replaces Alexios on this list. Her story takes place even before Bayek and Aya co-founded the Hidden Ones. Her beliefs aligned with the Brotherhood, giving her the title of a “Proto-Assassin.”

Mentor

  • Ezio, Connor, Bayek, Aya

Many Assassins over the years have held the title of “Mentor.” A senior Assassin who has something special to teach a Novice can be called a Mentor. This is similar to how Shay had several mentors before he was exiled from the Assassin Brotherhood. However, a “Mentor” in the true sense in AC means they must tutor the entire Brotherhood, overseeing a region. The names listed above were all responsible for handling and supervising the Assassin Brotherhood in their respective regions.

Master

  • Altair, Adewale, Arno, Basim, Jacob Frye, Evie Frye

Right before an Assassin can “mentor” the entire Brotherhood, they must first be granted the title of “Master Assassin.” This is given when an Assassin has shown their devotion to the Brotherhood and excels in their work. While not every Assassin can climb to this rank easily, many of the protagonists were able to achieve this rank even after their game had ended. However, the names listed here were the only ones who became Master Assassins by the end of their own video games.

  • Aveline

Right before an Assassin becomes a Master, they are officially considered an “Assassin.” While it is a general term used for all Brotherhood members, being an Assassin comes with its own duties. This means that the Masters in charge of supervising a region can directly entrust you with your own investigations without needing to check in frequently. Aveline de Grandpré from AC 3: Liberation was an Assassin who didn’t become a Master by the end of her spinoff game.

Outcast

  • Edward, Shay, Eivor

Being an “outcast” from the Brotherhood can mean a lot of things. The Assassin Brotherhood may be indifferent to you, hostile towards you, or treat you as an ally. Edward, Shay, and Eivor fit into these categories, respectively. While Edward went on to become a Master eventually, the Brotherhood didn’t accept him at first because he was never fit to wear the robes of an Assassin.

Shay, on the other hand, was exiled and became a Templar, making him an outcast to the Brotherhood. Lastly, Eivor never truly joined the Brotherhood, but she assisted them by taking out the Order of the Ancients. She was seen as an ally rather than a threat.
