How to Unlock Monk’s Hideous Laughter in Baldur’s Gate 3
To unlock Monk’s Hideous Laughter in Baldur’s Gate 3 you will need to find and break the curse placed on the Sentient Amulet, which is a process that starts in Act 1 and can be completed in Act 3. Removing the curse on the Amulet will grant you the ability to cast Tasha’s Hideous Laughter once per Long Rest. Tasha’s Hideous Laughter is a level 1 Enchantment spell, which when successful leaves a creature Prone with laughter. They cannot get up or take any action for up to 10 turns. It requires Concentration and only has a chance of working on creatures with an Intelligence of 5 or more.
Below are the steps to unlocking the Monk’s Hideous Laughter bonus in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3):
- Find the Sentient Amulet while at the Grymforge/Adamantine Forge in Act 1
- Speak to the spirit within and pick up the Help the Cursed Monk quest
- Proceed through the game until you reach the Rivington area in early Act 3
- Visit the Open Hand Temple and speak to Sister Yannis
- Find the crypt underneath and discover Shirra’s sarcophogus
- Tell the Monk spirit you are willing to try bearing the curse
- Pass two 15DC Wisdom/Constitution checks to succeed (failing either will permanently subtract from your Wisdom score!)
These are the basic steps for unlocking the Monk’s Hideous Laughter bonus in Baldur’s Gate 3. For a more through step-by-step guide, keep reading for additional details below.
Find the Sentient Amulet at the Adamantine Forge
To get the Sentient Amulet in Baldur’s Gate 3 you will need to find the Adamantine Forge, defeat the Grym and then head west across the lava to find a chest with the necklace locked inside. Starting from the Ancient Forge waypoint, proceed southeast along the expansive, fractured staircase until you reach the Forge, where you’ll confront Grym. Following the encounter, navigate westward by leaping from one rock to another to avoid the surrounding lava. Exercise caution to steer clear of the lava elemental that patrols the sizable platform at the conclusion.
This platform is your goal and once you’re safely there, you’ll find a skeleton next to an Adamantine Chest. You’ll need to pass a 20DC Sleight of Hand check in order to successfully open it. Inside you will find the Sentient Amulet.
Upon discovering the amulet, your party will sense an irresistible urge to burst into laughter. To resist this temptation, you must successfully navigate a Wisdom check with a Difficulty Class of 10. If you manage to stifle your laughter, the spirit of the Amulet will manifest, seeking your assistance in lifting its curse. While you have the option to disregard the quest and utilize the amulet in its current state, be aware that the lingering High Spirits condition may pose challenges. Keep in mind that the Help the Cursed Monk quest cannot be fulfilled until you reach Rivington in Act 3.
Complete the Help the Cursed Monk Quest in Act 3
To lift the curse from the Sentient Amulet and elevate its status to Very Rare, you must undertake the Help the Cursed Monk quest during Act 3. The Monk spirit, desiring relief, has proposed transferring the curse to his granddaughter. Locate Shirra at the Open Hand Temple in Rivington. Once there, engage in conversation with Sister Yannis, who reveals that Shirra passed away the year before and was laid to rest in the crypt beneath the temple.
Find the kitchen area in the north corner of the temple and inside you will find an Ornate Wooden Hatch. This will take you down into the crypt. From here, enter the double doors to the south, then enter the door to the west to find the sarcophagus of Shirra. Be sure to interact with the plaque on the sarcophagus in the southwestern area of the room before you open the lid. Afterwards, you’ll again enter into a conversation with the spirit.

With his granddaughter dead, the Monk’s spirit asks if the party would be willing to bear his curse instead. There are two diverging paths you can take here:
- Refuse. The Monk will become aggressive and raise nearby dead to fight you. Defeat them all and the curse on the Sentient Amulet will lift. Moreover, the perks on it will increase, as well. This is arguably the better result, especially if you have a Monk in your party who would benefit from wearing the Amulet.
- Agree. You’ll then have to pass two high DC Wisdom/Constitution checks and risk loosing Wisdom points if you fail. Succeeding is the only way to unlock the Monk’s Hideous Laughter bonus, however.
Presuming you want to unlock the Monk’s Hideous Laughter bonus, agree to the spirit’s proposal. You will immediately need to pass two 15 DC dialogue choices. One choice is Wisdom and the other option will be Constitution based. With each roll, if you fail, you risk loosing -1 to your Wisdom ability score. Even if you choose the Constitution option and fail, a Wisdom point is lost. Be aware that this is a permanent loss to your Wisdom ability score!
Additionally, there may also be an option for you to choose to use your Illithid power to pass one of the two checks. This will drop the Difficulty Check all the way down to a 2DC, which makes it much easier to pass.
Succeed both checks and the Monk spirit will be set free. After he’s gone, check your actions bar and you will find the spell Tasha’s Hideous Laughter now available. Congrats on acquiring this unique form of crowd control!
