In Baldur’s Gate 3, resistance and weakness are the keys to reducing or adding damage passively. Early in Act 3, you can gain the Legendary Weapon Nyrulna and Bhaalist Armour combo, which enables you to double your piercing damage. Bhaalist Armour produces an aura of Vulnerability to Piercing Damage. Vulnerability doubles the total damage taken from that source. Moreover, anyone else who is piercing damage to the target within the aura will also double their damage! This means longbows, daggers, shortswords, hand crossbows, and many other piercing weapons will deal double damage!

In this guide, we explain this overpowered weapon combo you’re not using in Baldur’s Gate 3, how to get it, and tips for your builds!

The Most Overpowered Weapon Combo You’re Not Using – Baldur’s Gate 3

Nyrulna Trident and Bhaalist Light Armour is the most overpowered weapon combo you’re not using because you can double-piercing damage! One character must wear the armor and move within two meters of the target, which triggers the vulnerable status effect. Any enemy not resistant or immune to piercing damage will take double as long as they are in the radius. Moreover, the Trident, while a melee weapon, also causes piercing damage. Therefore, the user can double their damage sources, reaching 50-60+ damage each attack!

Moreover, your party composition will likely want to stack multiple sources of piercing damage. Here are some choices:

Why is Nyrulna and Bhaalist Armour Weapon Combo Overpowered

Generally, players will have to wait until the end of Act 3 to obtain the Legendary Greatsword Balduran’s Giantslayer or Silver Sword of the Astral Plane. These +3 legendary items are some of the best but require completion of the House of Hope and Raphael fight. However, the Nyrulna can be obtained immediately in Act 3 introduction. Once obtained, the legendary Trident not only deals great damage, but has extra thunder damage, can be thrown with a Berserker Barbarian build, and has multiple special weapon attacks. Passively, the Nyrulna increases your movement speed by 3 meters and shines a glowing light in a radius of 6 meters. The damage is subpar compared to the Giantslayer, but not if you double it with vulnerability!

The Bhaalist Armour can be obtained after you enter Baldur’s Gate, lower city, and finish the Gortash introduction. You’ll have to work on solving a murder and another task to enter the Bhaalist area, but after agreeing to a choice, you will unlock a vendor where you can purchase the chest piece. Bhaalist Armour is light; therefore, nearly all classes can use it outside of spellcasters. Even spellcasters can use light armor if you take a Human or Half-Elf racial choice, freeing up nearly anyone in your party to equip. However, if possible, you will want the character to be a front-line melee build. Lastly, the Trident Nyrulna is considered a Verstalitle. Therefore, you can use it two-handed for maximum damage or with a shield for more Armour Class (AC). Thus, you have many options within the game to make this combination work and have it for the hardest fights in BG3.

Build Tips

The class and build to use the Nyrulna and Bhallist Armour combo are Paladin, Fighter, and Barbarian. These classes are designed for melee damage and have martial weapon proficiency. Additionally, any class that multiclass into two Fighter gains Action Surge, an additional action once per short rest. The general build strategy is to level up to gain Extra Attack at level 5 for Paladin, Fighter, Barbarian, and level 6 for Bard. Then, swap to either Rogue and Thief for an additional bonus action, finishing off with two or more into Fighter for Action Surge.

Baldur's Gate 3 Action Surge

With this combination of multiclass, each turn of your actions gives an additional attack and additional bonus action. Then, you can activate Action Surge for another two actions. The Paladin can use Divine Smite every attack, dealing huge damage. As a Berserker, the Barbarian can use the bonus action for additional attacks. Lastly, the Fighter at level 11 gains improved Extra Attack, attacking thrice per action. With an Elixir of Bloodlust and Potion of Speed, killing a target grants another action, and the potion yet another. This will give you three actions, each attacking at least twice, with two bonus actions, all dealing double damage!

Overpowered Combo Alternatives

The best alternative to the Nylruna trident overpowered combo is a wield dagger and shortsword. Crimson Mischief legendary Shortsword and Bloodthirst dagger make the best combination in Act 3. Ideally, you’d have a Rogue Thief multi-classed with a Fighter to gain Extra Attack and Action Surge. This combo would give you a bonus action to use your offhand weapon damage every turn. The piercing vulnerability would still apply, giving you a stealth alternative to the trident that wouldn’t require martial weapon proficiency.

The combat style would be similar: playing in melee range, heavily emphasizing bonus action utility and damage. The Duellist Prerogative weapon can also be a powerful alternative and is designed for a one-armed Bard build.

How to find Weapon and Armor

To obtain the Nyrulna Trident, you must collect the Rivington Circus of the Last Days. An NPC Akabi has a rigged game where you must steal a ring before spinning a wheel. This will give you a dialogue option with him and teleport you to an instanced-based area with a minor enemy NPC. Complete the area and grab the chest before turning to the portal.

To obtain the Bhaalist Armour, you must become the Unholy Assassin. This is a complicated set of decisions, but it starts by finding the Murder Tribunal. The easiest way is to defeat Gortash, who gives you the location, or visit and complete the Investigate the Murders quest. Once complete, head to Candullhallow’s Tombstone and enter the password Sicarius. There is a button behind a wall that enables the furniture to move. Press that, enter the tribunal, and agree to become the Unholy Assasin (if you choose). Then, a vendor will appear to have purchased the armour.
